I have in zone 6A a couple of cultivars of V. rhytidophyllum (one is Cree, but I can't remember the other) and also V. pragense. Both species have kept leaves through at least 10 below zero. Two of them are in full sun, one in more shade and that one is more open and a little rangy.

do some googling.. and find your county soil conservation district office ... and find out if they have an annual spring plant sale ... there may be many options for this type of project ... as i am wondering if you are limiting yourself to what you are seeing locally ....

soil conserv .... is wind blocking... but the net effect is sight blocking ... so why not utilize the resource ...

try the other state also ... some states are more aggressive then others .. with the literature ....

here near ann arbor... my experience with Vs ... which is very limited.. is that they are all deciduous .... i am sure there are evergreen ones ... but you will have to research that very carefully for your area north of me ...

the vigor of any given transplant in shade.. is an undefinable factor all of us but your experience ... it might take them a while to get going ... so dont expect them to get giant too fast.. but it is possible.. based on the sun you claim they might get ... its something you are just going to have to try ... do not expect a definitive answer on this ...
