need help with my tub/shower valve replacement

I am trying to replace old cheap tub/shower valves, spouts and shower heads. I don't know the brand or model of the old original handles/valves. It is a two handle (hot & cold) plus a middle handle for diverting water from the tub to the shower style. The plumber asked me to find a single handle with a trim which will cover the three holes described above. My problem is that the old handles cover an area approximately 10.5" wide and the widest trim I can find on a single handle valve is 8". I am trying to not rip out the tile and replace that wall. - Triona

Any special reason why the plumber recommended that ? Curious in CT

New showers---or repairing old ones-- require anti-scald protection. The least expensive is the single handled pressure balancing valve type. Thermostatic valve controls are much more expensive. Honestly, if the shower is old enough to have the old stuff without anti scald, it's time to rethink redoing the whole thing.

Curt - the plumber is trying to help me avoid taking out the tile in that bathroom. So finding new valves and trim to fit the old plumbing is near to impossible. this is a work around. I have ordered a plate from Delta I will try to upload it here. It should cover the two holes and the new handle will fit into it. problem solved I hope.
