Need ideas for quick planting

A friend's daughter is graduating from high school this June and his yard is a blank canvas.

He thinks he needs to go out and purchase a bunch of perennials and get them in dirt. I told him that a lot of perennials have a hard time during the first year of transplanting.

Does anyone know of some good things to plant/sow in his blank yard that would help spruce it up by this coming June?

I think for fast and easy you would need to go with annuals but if you don't want the yard looking bare in winter, you definitely need some perennials. I have a shade/part shade garden so most of my recommendations will be for those: hydrangea, hosta (look for fast growing variety), bugleweed or creeping jenny (creates a carpet), lavenders (full sun) or any bulb plants will look beautiful in spring and summer.
