Maybe start with a new mirror, not just plate glass on the wall and then a beadboard would look nice and break up some of the brown.

Knick-knacks above the toilet make me think of one thing--having to stick my hand in there to pull them out. I'd take down the shelves, and find a nice portrait oriented picture to go there.

The problem I see with putting in beadboard is fitting it around the cabinet and countertop. You would need to take the countertop off to get the right fit. It's doable, but you're going to have damage to the sheetrock from the silicone.

The floating shevles are too small and flimsy. To make it feel more unique and for extra storage, you could add a few rows of shelving (ending prior to wall jutting out) and have fun with accessorizing with larger items. Would make the room more interesting and I would skip the beadboard.
