It can be a formal living room, or a kids space, but not easily both. Incorporate plenty of storage, more than you think you need. Keep finishes easy-care, such as washable slipcovers, and washable rugs. Decorate on the walls, not on surfaces. Use an easily-cleaned paint on the walls. For formality, use symmetry. For lighting, no breakable lamps. For tables, no glass. Good luck.

Need opinion: I finally put my backsplash on and I am not a fan of the final result. My counters besides the stove are not of even height so my contractor suggested putting the backsplash on a different position. Let me Knapke what you think. I kind of hate it.

Your instinct is better than your contractor's advice. I would take out the 4 inch granite backsplash and have your tile go from counter to cabinet in the same direction.

Combining adult comfort and kid storage should get you to a successful combo. I believe this space should be an adult space that is inviting to kids instead of making it a kid space where adults find a place to sit. Kids grow and needs change but the adult will appreciate a nice sofa, curtains and more neutral colors that can carry you through the child's development.
