A mason can come and remove the brick "posts" that rise to the ceiling above the fireplace. Don't put the tv over that fireplace - too high and you have another good option on the far wall. Do add a nice mantel across the new top of the fireplace, take down the wood trim and patch the drywall and insulation behind it. Then, buy a great piece of art for over the fireplace - decide if you want to antique the brick or not, Perhaps replace the outdated fan with something larger with craftsman lines . . look to craftsman for inspiration when you select your mantel. Consider painting out the trim around the half rounds since it doesn't continue all around the other windows.
