Living room too small for two sofas?

my living room is 13x17. I have a large love seat and sofa that I am getting rid of. I want to replace them with two leather sofas. Is my living room too small to have sofas facing each other. I know a sofa and 2 chairs would be ideal for this space but I really want more seating. The last picture is the sofa I am getting.

i'm afraid your living room would be prime for a dilemma entitled "how do i decorate around these 2 large couches?" especially if they are in a dark color. put in the amount of furniture that is right for the room, and then a couple of side chairs that are more open, can be pulled up for extra seating. how often do you have 8 people that need to sink in for the long haul? good conversation is best conducted with the awake....

no photo of your desired couch, but leather is rarely lean in appearance. my advice changes if yours are.

Much of the decision depends on what kind of leather sofas you're buying. If they are the big casual, overstuffed ones with recliners built in, I doubt they'll look very good in this room and will overwhelm the more classic style wainscot and FP trim. I would place two sofas in an "L" in front of the FP. One would sit perpendicular to the window and the other would face the FP and be far enough away from it so that the door could swing fully open. Keep the sofas smaller scale and the both 3-seaters (no loveseat.) Add a sofa table behind the one that faces the FP, and place a floor lamp in the window corner behind the perpendicular one. Move your clock to the kitchen and add art above the FP mantel. Take a photo from the FP looking back so we can do something with that end of the room.

Thank you all for your feedback! This is a high traffic area and there would need to be a coffee table. This is the only way to position the sofas if they are facing each other because of the short wall in front of the kitchen. Here are the other pictures I tried to post that didn't go through. And the couch above is the one I plan on buying

Found these pictures of how I think 2 leather sofas could work in your space. Because of the narrow room, though, I would try to find a sofa that is not so bulky-more streamlined. The other option would be to do a sofa and 2 large chairs and you could always bring in extra seating when you have more people visiting. I guess it all depends on your life style and how many people you need seating for on a daily basis.

I have a brown leather couch like the one you're planning on buying. It is comfortable but it really limits what other furniture and textiles you buy. It is a sort of heavier look as someone mentioned above. If it was me, I'd consider a more traditional roll arm for your space. Really pretty space btw. If you love the leather just think about the rest of the room now.

leemiller, do you have any suggestions for a sofa that would better fit this space? I am not sure how a traditional roll arm differs from the one I was considering. Thanks!

Karen, I really like the sofas in both of those photos, especially with the blue accents in the second. That color would complement the BM Gentlemen' s Gray in my dining room.

nnigrt, would you consider the leather sofa I posted bulky?

News flash!!! Grown ups do NOT like to sit three-to-a-sofa!! Hard to converse when you're scrunched up next to someone....adults like to,face each other so they can talk! Also, the personal space thing. So....based on that simple fact 'o life, one sofa = 2 people, 2 sofas = 4 people. One sofa + two chairs also = 4 people. One sofa + 2 chairs is also much more flexible seating arrangement as chairs can be moved and ooched slightly to accommodate individual situations, esp when perhaps a spare chair (or two) from the dining room gets brought in for a larger group, or a stool/ottoman, etc....
Can you guess I'm not a fan of the double sofa...or sectional sofa??

I am currently re-decorating my family room which is long and narrow. I ordered two Kendall sofas in navy leather from Ethan Allen I used this photo for inspiration and have included a pic of the sofa

Have you considered a sectional, placed along the wall (with some art above) and facing the firepalce and a single chair on an angle near the firepalce with a floor lamp in the opposite corner, and a large square coffee table or ottoman (which can be used for extra seating). Where the wall opening is, add a console table and a lamp. Add a lovely area rug to ground the seating area as well and bring color into the room. I think two couches facing each other at this close range is a bit uncomfortable and not taking advantage of the rest of the room and the fireplace.

I do not think that two sofas are too much for the space. Being that you have hardwood floor you need to fill the space so it does not feel bare or cold when people are over.

Just get the sofas off the wall. Face them parallel to each other and move them closer to fireplace. Use a small long coffee table and only leave 18" between the sofas the table. Right now your sofa on the kitchen wall is cutting off the walkway. If you decide to go with the leather sofas consider getting a light colored area rug for the seating area. All that wood and leather is going to start looking dark and an cavish.

Mspanama, not sure where that sofa came from in the 2nd picture, but you can probably find something similar at allmodern.com. I think the lighter shade of brown vs a chocolate brown would look really nice with your gray walls.

What are the dimensions of the sofas you want? How many inches are interior seating space vs. arms?

A tip to avoid a heavy feeling is to keep the sofa arms smaller (a track arm for example) and some sofa leg on show.
