Use living room for seating and dining?

I would like to move my dining table into the living room, as i have a large living room (14'6" x 24') and can use the formal dining room as a family room. Can I use the fireplace (in the center of the living room) as a dividing line between the 2 halves? Not sure how this would look.

A photo would help, but what a great idea! If you don't want to divide the space evenly, you could use a buffet, bookshelf or sofa table, further toward the dining side, to avoid over-spacing the dining area.

Give it a try, and if you like it, it stays. If not, keep tweaking until you figure how to make it work, or decide it's never going to.
