The custom installed backsplash is made of polished stainless steel mosaic brick tiles, in this instance the smaller tiles create a "rippling" effect that counterbalances the Miele stainless steel hood. The glass canopy on the hood becomes an almost invisible floating plane yet it helps capture cooking fumes. Finally, to complete the chic look of this modern kitchen the floor is tiled with 24" off-white porcelain floor tiles with zero grout line. Needless to say, this entire project is an head-turner having received coverage in multiple magazines.

what is the distance between the base and wall cabinets? It looks shorter than the standard 18".

In a nutshell, zero grout line means almost exactly what it sounds like it means, the tiles are butted up against one another so close that it would appear not to have the usual line of grout separating the tiles. This is accomplished by using rectified tiles (in this case porcelain) that have been carefully ground to a uniform size and shape. The American National Standards for Ceramic Tile Installation recommends rectification to 0.0025" in variance or less for installation without a grout line. The other stipulation is that the foundation the tiles are laid upon be inflexible so there is no chance of the tiles shifting or "bouncing" as a person walks across the floor. Generally the actual grout line in a zero grout line installation is 1/16", or in this case even smaller and needs to be professionally installed by an expert.
