Well I must say your finished room is pretty. Everyone suggested beige charcoal solid colors. But I would consider a stripe or plaid would be nice...you have alot of natural light and the space is not compact.

Here is another view of the room. Ignore the curtains as the window needs replacing and I am waiting for that.

Nice room. Cute puppy. I would do a cream or white. Could be charcoal but it would be more limiting. I feel it would look a bit heavy, but certainly ok

I think I would go with the dark charcoal. Love that chair!

love the finished room airy spacious lots of light... I know many would say No but I would consider a stripe or plaid with similar colors in the chair. As regards Trucker unfortunately some never got the training to be tasteful in speech probably because of limited vocabulary

    Thank you, shellybean57!!
    Your room is looking great!

A black or dark grey couch with red throw pillows maybe?
Charcoal grey, maybe a little lighter.
Love the room and the chairs. I'd go for a lighter rug and a medium charcoal on the couch.

I'd go with a deep gray sofa with light grey and deep red accent pillows. Of course, it all depends on the rest of the room. You've got to be sure it doesn't feel too heavy, so a very light grey paint on the walls is a good place to start.

Definitely a creamy white with rich textural qualities in the fabric ... the balancing of light and dark can come from the addition of throw pillows
  • 11 years ago

keep the sofa neutral or you will regret it years later its a big ticket item and chairs can be replaced or moved to another room a lot easier

I would go with something like this. Sorry for the messy rendering, but it gives you an idea. I like the lighter color area rug in this picture as well.

Lovely, inviting room. One thought: it might be easier to find a rug that works with your great chairs & then pick a solid shade of gray or other to work with chairs & rug, versus trying to find a rug that works with chairs, sofa, walls, etc.

In last posted photo, it looks like rug is quite far back under the loveseat, so it appears smaller than it is. If pulled out so just front legs are on rug, it might be big enough that front legs of chairs as well as legs of new larger sofa would sit on it, too.

On my monitor, the reds in the lampshade, rug, & chairs are great together, however, the red pots look off. New pots, throws, pillows, other accessories could be great way to pick up other colors & textures from the art & chair fabric.

I agree with the color on the pots, replacing those with something nicer

Thanks Mark I like your rendering

Color and material selection are equally important, and rely upon the style of the room. For a soft, updated look that transcends any design scheme, I'd select a soft shade of plum in a fabric that has some texture. I recently fell in love with the color of the sofa illustrated here. It picks up the purple shadings of the chair fabric. Add some navy toss pillows.

I'm glad you said "go" instead of "match". If you're eclectic, (like me) the sky's the limit. If you're more traditional, a neutral-ish color but stay consistent with shapes and styles.

charcoal grey couch and accent with the reds and beiges.

You might consider a grey velvet couch
    standing lamp with black shade
    red and grey pillows
red and black bowl (or similar)on the coffee table
light grey sisal rug or geometric pattern

I vote as well for charcoal with red accents around the room. Shellybean, I like the idea of a red carpet, but bigger than the one in the photo. Can't wait to see the "new" room. :0)

    PS
It is unfortunate that some tend to confuse "freedom of expressing their opinion" with the right to be rude to others. Good manners, people skills, emotional quotient (or whatever other description we use for all these) are important in our lives for peaceful coexistence and mutual respect. Imagine how I would have felt if at a recent shopping outing my friend said: "the dress you tried on makes you look like an overweight whale!" What did she say instead was: "that dress does not flatter you and doesn't do justice to your figure". She still has a happy, smiling, loyal friend! Need I say more?

I vote for a warm camel or khaki. I love red accents and the chair looks like a great start.

Your room is beautiful! Did you want to change the sofa? What are the undertones in the grey on your walls? Your rug works, because as I can see, it pulls out the red in the chair. If in fact you are changing the sofa then I would choose a soft grey with the same undertones as the wall. White would also work but may send you in a different direction. Pillows on the sofa is key and can be changed any time. Green in accent colors can be used in small amounts. Also pull out some of the soft pinky/peachy tones in the chair. Good luck you are doing a fabulous job!

I think I see a peach in the chair, so a peach would be nice.

The picture above the couch is begging for gray!

Wow, you guys are awesome. I am thinking grey/charcoal is the way to go. Love the accessories that were posted. I struggle finding ones I like. I know the coffee table could use something more outstanding. Again thank you!!!

Hi all! I believe I would go with a warm, creamy beige because the chair has all cool color except for the bit of gold and cream. Go get fabric samples before you do anything though. And I agree the rug is a bit too small - I would definitely go larger at least two feet in both directions.

As for the trucker49 post, as I was scanning all the input from folks and suddenly read theirs, I just thought what a shame manners and good behavior seems to becoming a thing of the past. Really "trucker49" ? It's your emphasis on the word HAD and the flippant remark. Just be nice for heavens sakes!!!! I personally like the chair and the sophisticated upholestry pattern. So if I HAD to have a name like "trucker49", I doubt I would be displaying my crudeness in front of people just trying to make their home nicer.

    You're WELcome!

Camel or something there in the beige family, to offset the dark grey and compliment the red print. Then pull those colors back in from the chair with some toss pillows.

A sofa of a similar style in the background color of the chair. Your chair is beautiful. Let it be an accent piece to show it off!

Shellybeans, I was provided a link to this rug site about a week ago, and it has really helped me in selecting a rug for our living room. You should be able to find exactly what you want here, or at least get some idea of which colors you would or wouldn't be happy with. You can search for any color, size, style, weave, material, border, etc. I found over 100 rugs in different shades of solid red. Hope this helps! BTW, let's don't give negative folks any more energy...it isn't worth it. And for the record, Shellybeans, those chairs are a delight to the senses! You just keep on keepin' on girl. Can't wait to see the finished palette.

I would not have the chair in the first place.

Understanding the one question that the owner presents to us pertains to "couch colour suggestions". Its a fair assumption that the owner very much enjoys the chair for any number of reasons which is good enough for me. That being said, a polite, pleasant & positive host/hostess is what makes me feel welcome in any living space.

What a lovely room! I still think a couch in a charcoal would help the chairs take the focus, as they should. I love your red rug, but agree it gets lost on your beautiful floor. Consider a lighter colored area rug.

Sunbrella has a very deep charcoal gray fabric for sofas that reminds be of a man's suit fabric. I love the feel & color of it. Use red or dark burgundy & light gray or green that is the vine color of the chair then one other color from the chair. Love the chair fabric!

I would go with a medium blue gray color.

Barbara I like your rug idea color...I would carry a soft gray or warm mid range beige (from rug I used) into the room for the sofa and than start throwing pillows on sofa with neutrals and pops of color from the chair.

Have you considered putting the chair in the spot where you now have your other chair by the window.

The reason I ask is that I think the front on view as you enter the space would have a better impact and make what ever colors you choose cohesive and the colors would flow better in the room.

I would find a linen color sofa and have pillows that are the navy in your sofa.

A couple of days ago I mentioned a medium blue gray sofa. I wanted to add to that comment and say that an off white rug (the off white that is in the chairs) would really brighten up the ensemble. The red rug on the floor now is clashing with the floor color. I found a navy fabric for some pillows for the sofa at Artistic Fabrics.

Thank you mrsnissen, I too think the rug is fighting with the floor but I don't see how blue would work with the current color scheme

Maybe i did not explain very well...

    Off white for the rug

Medium blue gray for the sofa

navy fabric for the pillows on the sofa,

    does that sound better?

Hi Shellybean, my monitor is picking up blue in most of the photos, but the photo with the chair back in the foreground is picking up more charcoal. Here are some sofas from Overstock that might look good...

    Love those sofas thank you!
Gorgeous chair-I agree with the other comments . An elegant medium grey
  • 11 years ago

I'd decide on a rug color either before or at the same time as the sofa; they will really affect each other. I like the grays/charcoal but if you want anything but a neutral rug you need to choose it before committing to other items.
