Kitchen Island panel made from veneer??

So we just had custom cabinets made for our kitchen and they turned out very nice. I can see some areas of cost cutting, but all are well out of sight except one. The island is 24 x 60 and the sides and door fronts are all 3/4 wood, but the back (part everyone sees is made from a thin veneer and have real wood raised panels mount on them. The cabinet guy says the raised panels are what give it structure, I say bunk. I have a concern about whether this is the norm today or not. I have concerns that while any of the real woods sides will hold up and can be repaired if damaged the veneer can not be. Also my concern is that as the tile floor is maintained (mopped, etc) that water will cause the bottom to swell and deform.

Has anyone else seen this on their custom cabinet islands? Should push fight back and insist on a 3/4 inch backing before Granite gets placed on top?

If you are asking if a 3/4tr panel offers advantage over 1/4tr or even 1/8th,I don't think so. i would not expect a large imoble panel to be very thick. You have a valid concurn about water damage where island contacts floor,but i don't know what the cabinet maker can do to prevent it. I suppose the island could rest on 1/2" water resistant material but have never seen it done.

My only concern would be that the back of the island might not be strong enough to support it's part of the granite. And that's more a function of the framing than the cosmetic part.

If you are worried about water damage, that's why toe-kicks are used.

Never thought about the granite, I think I am just going to tell the cabinet maker I am not happy with the island and he needs to do better supports all around and will not get paid until island is complete.
