Work around countertop & backsplash

Cabinets will be painted & probably glazed. My niece would like to use a grey tone but can't replace the counter and backsplash right now.

Can the backsplash be painted since it may be pourous? Could she possibly pull off a grey tone with this countertop?

Thank you for all suggestions!

What comes immediately to mind is this glorious transformation by another houzzer:

I think these cabinets would look wonderful with a similar treatment -- I borrowed a bit of the texture to show you:
I think that the backsplash is okay, and it helps to pull together the gray and golden tones, especially leaving the cabinet interiors as is. I might also suggest finding an indoor/outdoor sisal to warm up the floor if that would be practical for her usage of the area.
