Sears GDO does not close

I've searched on the forum without any luck. My Sears garage door opener which is around 14 years old is not functioning properly. Sometimes when you go to close the door it will not close. It might move a foot then stop, then when you hit the button it will move again. Sometimes it takes upwards of 4 or 5 time to get the door to close all the way. Sometimes it works just fine. It doesn't matter if you use the wall switch or any remote. It doesn't show an obstruction (no blinking lights). I adjusted the chain and that didn't help. At first I thought it was because it was so cold, but it is still doing it with the warmer weather. Any ideas, or is the motor just tired and worn out?

Have you opened the case to see if anything looks wrong?

It could be that the neoprene drive gears are worn out and need replacing, a reasonable DIY task.

Well, I don't know if this will help anyone in the future but I think I found out the problem. However, not until after I bought a replacement opener.
Inside the trolley that rides on the rail are "wear pads", and guess what?
They were completely worn off of the top (only the bottom part was left) and the trolley was rubbing on the the rail and actually wore the paint off the rail. This was probably causing too much resistance and the circuit was detecting this to be something blocking the door. I don't know this for sure, since I just replaced the entire unit. Sears doesn't sell just the wear pads, you would have to buy the trolley for around $23.
