I would lean toward a rectangle table, especially to get in the 6 chairs. Put two on each side and then some high back arm chairs on each end to add some interest. I would go with metal legs and glass top. With having lighter hardwood floors and dark cabinets, that would be the best option as to not feel like there is too much wood and give it a modern/contemporary look to your kitchen. You could check out roomandboard.com for some tables. I bought one from them (parson table with gray steel legs and frosted glass top) and it's beautiful. Adding some bright colored chairs would be a great way to throw in some color and visual interest. Good luck!

I do not like glass tables. You have a lovely space to work with. Go with a vintage reclaimed wood with a grayish finish & steel legs. & pick MCM chairs that have metal legs with bucket seats or go with different colors of the 'ghost' chair. Hi! After looking at your kitchen picture and reading your question I have a few suggestions. The first being: Avoid a table with a wood top. Your kitchen is dark and therefor presents itself as "heavy" You have stainless appliances so you are definitely leaning towards the modern/contemporary realm of style. I would suggest a glass top table. I cant say weather round, oval or square would work best as I can not determine how much space is available for the table in the picture. I recommend glass top because it will allow that side of the room to feel open and airy as opposed to the dark and heavy kitchen allowing the space to present itself as larger than it actually is. Another reason I suggest glass top is the fact that you already have wood flooring and cabinets. The last thing this room needs is more wood, especially dark wood. As for color of chairs, I agree on the need for color! A pop of red, or sage green would compliment space, although choosing a less intense color and leaning towards the pastel hue's would make the space feel more inviting and warm..... Our layout is extremely similar to yours. We have a rectangular table that is small, but seats 6. We have had it for 11 years with three kids in the house and it has never been a problem. It was a cheap set from IKEA that came with four chairs. When the rattan chair tops wore out, I replaced them with plywood, which I eventually painted lime green. We have a painted red wooden chair at one end for a 5th seat. I like art nouveaux type patterns for fabrics, and I love to mix and match bright colors. I painted the room a neutral gray, and did a teal backsplash and chair rail with semi-gloss paint (We are definitely on a budget!)

There is the regular table cloth I use from time to time just to change things up. I also switch the direction of the table and switch out the vases.

Speaking from experience - run , run away from a glass table top. We don't even have children to consider - every 5 minutes you're wiping little dust particles from the top - especially when it's near those sliding glass doors, with the sun streaming in.... they look lovely in pictures but are a pain to live with.

Add another light fixture next to the one present (splurge for something nice) & butt a long table against the island. Place a China table for serving food near the door.

A rectangular table would look much better than oval and will make the area look more spacious. A wooden table top will darken the kitchen even more. I think a frosted or gray glass table with steel base would look spectacular there and flows with the modern stainless steel appliances and gray counter tops. Found these two at Antonini Modern Living, so you can have an idea of the frosted/colored glass. Don't forget to post pictures after you finalize your project, would love to see the outcome! I'm not sure a glass table would work because the room looks like it needs some warmth. Why not a wood table? I like the color ideas for the chairs. I'd change out the lighting over the table, seems like it's too small and not enough charm. My choice would be something that has a beautiful color to the glass, casting a warm light while dining.

A glass table top could be great to keep things light- just make sure to ground everything with a comfy rug underneath - your feet will thank you too ;-) !

Nobody...I mean NOBODY likes looking down thru a glass tabletop and seeing their chubby little thighs. (Lol). Not to mention, every fingerprint and dust speck shows up...especially when the sun shines on the table. Round tables are my preference...you can always ooch over to accommodate that unexpected person, and if you get one with a leaf...well, then you have just that much more,flexibility.

,, I believe you have several things to consider in making your dining table and chair decisions. The ceiling lighting fixture needs to hang in table centre. Are you considering a more modern fixture? As mentioned a table [flat surface] is a magnet for clutter. Everyone comes in and drops their stuff on both table and chairs in the welcoming space. In my experience a glass table requires endless cleaning, finger prints, dust motes and streaks, seems to find their way to glass. I'd plan to use colorful table cloths, runners, tapestries, throws, ethic looking fabric, placemats to emphasis seasonal decor or theme but mainly to reduce the work. Perhaps Salas's table base is too heavy looking for your space, KB's suggestion is lighter. If you like to use your table for meal planning, projects, homework, laptop/tablet, you may prefer a table on wheels that can be so easily moved to a wall. In our 1st home we chose chairs that functioned where needed. One of the 6 chairs was used as a bedroom chair for years, a second was in the living rm, returned to the table only when needed, 4 chairs mostly remained in dining area. Some tables have a drop down - pull out feature that's wonderful at the holidays or if you do buffet style meals.

I've no idea of your budget but suggest IKEA as a starting point for their 'compose' a table. I tried to bring up a link but my 'puter failed.

Check out the cool tables from Wicked Workshop (link above). We got a reclaimed maple wood table from them. Wood was from the bottom of old box cars. Hairpin steel legs. So unique and so cool. Love it. I'd go with rectangular.

I would have a rectangular table made to extend from the island. I'd have the top covered in stainless steel for ease of clean up. Then have a long bench on the side nearest the slider and colorful chairs on the otherside. Lovely space!

Thank you everyone for your valuable suggestions! Really appreciate it. I spent another month thinking over it :) and glass table definitely sounds like a lot of maintenance - so I'm gonna take that option out of my list.

I' still inclining towards something modern european (budget is not too high - around 600-700 for the table) and shortlisted a few options. Now I'm split between these two :

1. A lighter wood top with stainless steel legs. (Ideally would have wished a more grayish one, but couldn't find one in my budget)

Pros : Love the look, steel legs. Cons : Wooden top. I don't know if it would look good with my hardwood floor (which is red oak).

2. White Finished Top and metal base

Pros : Again, very sleek. Could match with any color chairs. Cons : May be it would be too much white in my kitchen as I have an almost white counter top. Also, I have added white bar stools for the island.

I really like the look of these chairs for your dining room, but with a round wood table as I agree with glass! Definitely the style of this table would look awesome, but maybe with a cream colored top! The light colored chairs will really brighten the space!
