Most that I've received just have the bud eyes razored off--and, yes, sometimes they stubbornly grow back, even from surprisingly deep cuts.
I kind of re-core those out of the sticks. Usually do an inspection & re-de-budding when I pot up rooted sticks from bands into gallons.
When I start my own sticks, I kind of do an initial vee-type cut using a razor knife: an angled cut above & down under the bud, then an angled cut below & slice it off. Kind of a wedge incision. On a lot of stuff now, I'm sticking the point of the knife into the bud area & coring the thing out--hopefully for good.

Okay, not sure how helpful these are, but here goes:
Downcut above bud on Banksia stick. This stick is already rooted in a band. I'll bud to it this summer.

Upcut to remove the bud:

Finished wound. I leave the top bud growth to support the cutting while buds are knitting.

Healed old cut on a stick--don't see any regrowth yet.

Gouging out a bud with point of the razor knife

Finished. I kinda like doing this--you can core down deep, circle around the base of the sprout, yet leave a small wound. (actually, this is kind of big, because the bud is pretty well developed.

Thanks for the great demo Bluegirl! That's kinda what I did when I took the cuttings to root them, but I must not've cut deep enough. Will try again. I need to check and see if they've rooted yet anyway. I'll try some more this weekend too. This is going to be FUN!

Well, I tried to do some grafting and ended up cutting my dang finger with the exacto knife! LOL Only tried one, but did two grafts on it. We'll see what happens! If it works, I'll do some more.

Well, good for you for trying. If you don't get a take, try again next month. I've tried at different times of year & they usually take, even in cool weather, but they may not push until the weather warms.
I'm holding off until May/June, because that's when I got the fastest results here. Plus, that's when I can root Fortuniana fastest.

Oh ok, maybe I'll hold off a bit too. Don't have time to collect more cuttings right now anyway.

Beth I have "Pink Clouds" that Burling likes if you would like a plant or cuttings. I have a spare plant and one from Linda as well. My planted ones are doing great and I thought I would start cuttings from those for personal use and distribute the potted ones to others
