how do you determine the kitchen island size
so it does not look disproportionate to the kitchen

    Hunh??? I'm a landscaper professional, but as a jack of all trades individual, my first suggestion would be as to what allowable space are you considering to occupy with a kitchen island? Room dimensions/open area of floor? Also consider access to that island: would you do so from all sides or just one side. Ability to be able to have the width of one & 1/2 person be able to move freely around it?
