Replacing heat pump and keeping current air handler....

Well the good news is we are being blessed with a new heat pump compliments of our home warranty. We currently have a Goodman air handler model aruf486016ab and are looking at how large of a seer we can put with it.

Our home is 2350 square feet plus a soon to be finished basement of another 1250 sqft. We are looking of at least a 13 maybe a 14 seer HVAC but can I go bigger then that? I want to be efficient but not break the bank in the process. We also are looking to buy new windows for our house as well. I must stay with Goodman I was told or possibly Lennox or Payne. With our inside unit being Goodman should i just stick with Goodman? The air handler was put in back in 2009 if that helps. We are in the Lower Ohio valley area if that helps...

Yes, you should be staying with Goodman. What size and model was old HP condenser? R-22 or R-410 refrigerant? You want a matching AHRI system if possible or else you may just be solving one problem by creating another.

Our air handler is able to go either way on refridergant so we are going with a heat pump that will take R-410A. The technitian said that we can only go to a 13-14 seer heat pump. I wanted a scroll compressor as well. He said our air handler don't have a 2 stage motor on it...not sure what that means! Can't he change the cage to aid in a higher seer?
We will stay with Goodman as stated above.

13 SEER will be phased out this year. 14 SEER will be the new minimum efficiency.
