what's this on my Viburnum?

I have two otherwise healthy Viburnum 'Autumn Jazz' that have strange textures on the undersides of about 25% of their stems. every year it seems to affect more stems. anybody know what it is?

turn it over.. so whatever is on top ...

and try a background color other than white ... ken

Isn't E. dentatum a subspecies of E. alatus? The pictures reminded me of the winged bark characteristic common to some euonymus.

I agree.....a better image would be nice.

The OP says this is a Viburnum dentatum 'Autumn Jazz'. We really need a better view of the 'growths'. At present the nearest thing I can think of is adventitious roots. Is there a sprinkler or something which keeps the stems damp?

Is it near a wooded area? Look at the other trees that are nearby, do they have it too? What is the overall health of the shrub? It may be harmless, or your shrub could be in poor health and it is taking advantage, you can take that to a nursery close by, they will tell you.
