hey Sammy379, That kitchen island has a single slab top- from here it looks like Walnut. I live in SC and do this type of work, I'd love to discuss it more if you are in the region? thewoodenking@gmail.com

Hey millssnell, I am actually in the Pacific North West. I am looking to do a mantle in this style of wood and finish. I am probably to far out to go through you as a supplier but do you have any recommendations on how I might go about doing this? Thanks!

It's called a Live Edge slab. In your area, sammy379, you should be able to find a dozen people that can do this. If you are working with an architect or designer, ask them to help coordinate it. If you are doing this yourself, look for a millwork shop in your area, or if you are REALLY doing it yourself, call various lumber yards and ask what kind of live edge species they offer. Good luck with your project!

Hey Sammy, I'm also here in the PNW, and I saw a place in Aurora, OR with this kind of work. Great stuff!

I second roomTen's comment. The key with doing it yourself will be how you plane the top of the wood smooth and flat, and the finish. There may even be mills in your area that will plane the top for you. Search for "live edge slabs" or "fletches".

    Hope that helps.

This is a very popular look right now. You see it all over. Google for vendors in your area.
