Help in open living space

We moved into our first home nearly two years ago and are still struggling with how to best use this space and/or arrange furniture. We love that the living areas are open, but just aren't creative enough to envision how to make the areas work together without looking too separate. Thank you in advance!

How do you use the area with the wood floors? Right now it looks pretty empty?

As far is the carpeted area, you might try pulling all the furniture in closer to make a cozier grouping. Do you actually use the ottoman as a foot rest? If not, you might try making it the "coffee table" by placing a tray on it and moving the two tiered glass one somewhere else. Of course, it might not be the right scale for that.

The wood floor room is pretty much empty right now as that is what we are having trouble deciding on. We do use the ottoman but I am looking into a new coffee table instead of the current metal piece

put the drop leaf table in the middle under the fan, add an area rug, and make it a game, office area. put the desk between the windows. try floating the sofa to face the windows, and put the two chairs paired under the windows. since there is no TV in the space the window should be the focal point. put a console table behind the sofa. remove the vertical blinds and invest in some curtains. start putting stuff on the walls. what are those random squares in the carpet?

try taking the gray rug and table and putting them under the fan for a start.

If the room with hardwood isn't being used, then you must have a family room and some sort of eat in kitchen/ dining room. If all your needs are already met, this could be a lovely, cozy reading nook. A place to enjoy a quiet cup of tea. With a desk, a place to pay bills. Shelves could be converted into a craft storage. Otherwise it could be a place to watch TV and or a place to sit and eat.id love to see carpet pulled out to discover hardwood to match adjoining room!

Are you planning on purchasing new furniture for the hardwood area? Or using your existing furniture? I would take 1 piece out of the living room, and make a reading nook in the hardwood area. That is if your family does not sit on all of the living room furniture. Definataly paint the room that is tan to a color with a gray base, then the 2 rooms will flow more. Maybe adding a punch of color in area rugs or for pillows. For many clients, my advise is take everything you have into account for wall or other decor. Spray paint, or any paint goes a long way in lamps, tables and wall decor. Adding fabric can instantly cozy up the space and make them look more seamless from 1 room to another.

well that was a very silly placement for those lol. I would change the covers to almond or white. to match better to the carpet. you can spray paint the ones you have.

I would just get rid of the entire wall and that will create a huge family living space . Then bring the wood to carpet area to make it seem like just one room. Right now its seems to be confusing.

There are many things in this home that don't make much sense structurally :) it is a 1960s home so some of the vents, etc are not in the most ideal place. I spray painted them from the original ugly light brown but may look into almond.

My plan is to buy perhaps an end table and large armchair to place in front of the built in for the hardwood room. I am having trouble with placement of any furniture or design pieces surrounding the fireplace/ on the opposite side of the room from the built ins.

We do already have a formal dining room and an eat in kitchen. Long term, I would love to make the kitchen a bit larger and then the reading nook would look more nook like. However, that is a much more involved project and we are already in the middle of a bathroom reno.

I appreciate all of the feedback so far.

I think for now I would take the love seat out of the carpeted room and put it front of the fireplace in the room with the wood flooring. It looks to big for the corner it is in right now. I'd also try pulling the patterned chair out from the corner and closer to the sofa.

Maybe a deep windowseat (almost a daybed) Grab and book from the built-ins and curl up and enjoy.

There is a fireplace? I don't see a picture of that on my iPad. Hmmm. What about making the flooring in the two rooms the same so that it flows as one big room (probably more money then you want to spend right now). Then you can arrange several seating areas (by the fireplace, by the windows, by the builtins) but not feel quite so constrained by the current division between the rooms.

I assume a previous owner took out most of the wall or added on a room to an existing place? That would explain the vents where they are.

Yes, I assume they tried for the open floor plan idea but didn't completely execute it with uniform flooring, etc

I have attached a picture with the fireplace. Thought I had attached 5 photos in original post but it looks like only 4 uploaded
