sub for glass wall?

We are at the beginning of planning a bathroom re-do. Space is limited. Presently there is an all in one acrylic shower stall in a corner of the room. In the hopes of gaining more room inside the shower we are looking at the glass walled showers that are so popular. Glass is counter indicated for us due to all the deposits in our water. We hope to tile the two outside walls, use a shower curtain for the exit and entrance and for the fourth wall has anyone used a sold surface material before? We could gain four inches if we didn't have to build a wall to hold tile. Glass in this application seems common..but I have been unable to find a supplier for say a slab of faux-granite. Anyone know where I could look, or if this is done?

Great idea, certainly a fixed panel of glass (either clip's or u channel) could be replaced with a myriad of materials.

Richlite panel?

Perhaps corian ?

get in touch with your local countertop/ solid surface vendors...

i think options are endless. cost effective????

The cost will certainly be interesting..but if we off set the labor time and wall/tile expense it may get to almost "affordable"? We will see. This is the crux of my question, is this done ever, so possibly it won't be horrendously expensive?

A countertop fabricator should be able to do this for you. You may be able to use the same hardware as you would for glass. It will not be inexpensive, but it shouldn't have any more fabrication cost than a plain run of counter. Dupont Corian comes in a limited number of translucent options.

I am planning a swanstone shower. From the instructions for installation:
"Installation Procedure
Swanstone panels can be installed over a variety of products.
If you intend to apply the panels to any surface other than
those described, consult with a professional contractor. Use
the following sections when installing this product over:
SHEETROCK/GREENBOARD/CEMENTBOARD/WOOD
PLASTER
CEMENT/CONCRETE
OLD TILE
WALLPAPER
MASONITE"

They do not offer the option of Swanstone being free-standing.

Corian can be used by itself to fabricate furniture, so it can be self-supporting. I guess it depends on the individual solid-surface material.

1/2" thick acrylic solid surface would work well in this application, but be sure to remember the front and back sides don't always match depending on color/particulate. It's not going to be cheap.

Corian Glacier Ice or one of the "illumination" series, which are translucent, would probably be best for this application. It will be more expensive than even low iron glass, I think.
