I read the countertops are granite. What is it called?

There is a lot of speculation about what the countertops really are-I have heard granite, quartzite, and dolomitic marble; I think part of the confusion is that there are several that look similar, and I also think some stones have more than one name. When I purchased it, I was told it was called Super White granite. My fabricators were a company called The Stoneworx

and they are located in Neenah, WI. I picked out the slab in Chicago at a supplier called Cosmos Stone; I was very pleased with the price and service!

@DLJ--your kitchen is very beautiful. The stone you have is a quartzite. THe reason for the confusion is that, like other stones, not every quartzite is a 100% quartzite stone. The variations that we all (not all, but some of us) like are actually other types of stone that were incorporated into the stone when it was forming. In your case, the impurities within the stone are dolomitc marble. This is different from "regular" marble and is harder--but not as hard as the quartzite (one of the hardest of stones) or granite. The reason that people who "want the look of marble" like the quartzite-marble blends is because they look like marble. They "look like marble" because the marbling IS marble, with the majority of the composition white or colorless quartzite. This makes an excellent and beautiful countertop, BUT....The but is that marble (even dolomitic marble) still etches. It does not stain easily and is very hard and durable, but it still etches. Many stone warehouses call this stone a granite. It is NOT a granitie. There is NO SUCH thing as a white granite. Granite is dark grey. NEVER white. Many other places sell it as a marble--which it KIND of is. More repubitable places sell it as a quartzite--BUT it also does not perform as a 100% quartzite either, so even this label must be qualified. The only "issue" with this stone and the only thing that keeps it from being the abslolute PERFECT kitchen surface for people who want the look of marble with a bullet proof durability, is that it DOES etch in the places where the stone is marble, as you have seen. I am attaching a fair article that details this stone. In my mind for the purpose of saying what the stone is, it is a quartzite.

we installed Taj Mahal Quartzite with a leathered finish about 2 years ago and could NOT be happier. It is beautiful and durable and has no downside that I have seen (except cost). If I had it to do over again I would FOR SURE buy it again. FYI--we COOK in our kitchen. It is not for looks.

Now your first explanation back on 2015 about quartzites et al., with all respect, does not make any sense = it is not true.

djlmom = super beautiful kitchen and super beautiful marble installed, congratulations.

Your counter is a marble from Cachoeiro de Itapemirim/Gironda region, Brazil. It has nothing to do with a quartzite. Super White aka Donna Sandra or Mont Blanc. Super special stone, wonderful slab selection, flawless design combination.

I know because I was the first one to buy this stone to U.S. market few years ago...
