I think maybe a sitting/reading area is the only logical option. This is a home we are potentially purchasing, but this loft area is a prominent visualization when you open the front door and we're stumped with it.

Wall art that has some dimension. Or a sculpture on a stand. These may not be your style, but you get the idea. I searched sculptural wall art in Houzz.

How about a narrow entry type table with a couple lamps, a laptop would sit nicely on a table that size. It looks a little small to put a very comfortable chair there. What are the dimensions of the space? Maybe a rocking chair? Just bookshelves, or a large art piece, statue or planter.

In reality, would you really sit and relax in that space?

I think with the railing in the way art wouldn't show up very well. I would recommend either moving the front railing to the back of the niche and put a sculpture or plant with trailing vines that would trail over the edge in front of the railing or make it into a library.

I'd wall it off to above as as extra coat closet and find a nice vertical art piece for the new wall.

i go with courney's suggestion, it would make a unified headwall. its not working for me as a juliet balcony at all.

While I like the idea of walling it off, the openness does add to the appeal of the front entryway, as much as its an awkward space to look at when you come in.
The sculptured art is a great idea, as some of you are right, in reality overlooking the foyer, would be an awkward place to lounge. Please keep the suggestions coming!

We had friends with a similar dilemma and then enclosed it and added on to a small bedroom that was there. It looked like it had been there forever.
