Please help select a rug for living room

Dear Houzzers,

I would be grateful for help choosing a rug for our living room. (We're going to put the existing rug, which is maroon/dark red, in the bedroom.) I'm going to get the new rug from Flor (carpet tiles), so there are many colors and patterns to choose from. And should it be a bit bigger? This rug is 6.5 x 10 feet.

The walls & ceiling of the room are SW Dover White except for the fireplace wall which I painted a color called Clay (Yolo Colorhouse) to warm up the big room. The sofa is turquoise blue, the rocking chair is deep orange and the Kennedy chair is heather green. The little ottoman/end table cubes are charcoal gray.

I know that's a lot of color already, so I was thinking a good color for a rug might be a soft light gray, similar to the background of the painting over the mantel. I suppose you could call this painting my inspiration piece.

Thoughts? And should the rug be solid or should I try a pattern?

Incidentally, if anyone has ideas for better furniture placement in this room, I'm open to it! Many thanks.

Love your space and your colors! So nice to see something besides gray and dark brown! :-) As for rug color, you might consider something the color of the lighter clouds in your painting, unless that doesn't make sense from a practical standpoint.

I'm loving the MCM vibe in the room. Adore the surrealist art. Great for inspiration. I like that you are going with the Flor tiles. Very practical and can do so many different patterns. You could go with one of their muted stripes in shades of the painting colors. Let us know what you go with or photo some choices, please.

Wow. I was posting while retroearth was posting her photos. I think I like the top choice & don't know if they should all be the same or to mix them up with some solid color ones.

Thank you, all! Retroearth, those are beautiful, and I love the colors in the second one. But maybe too bold for me. I confess, I'm a chicken when it comes to bold pattern.

We're going to the Flor Store on Wednesday (last day of their 25% off sale), so I have until then to decide. I like Sooz001's idea of trying to match the lighter clouds in the painting, and also sandraclark's idea of muted stripes. What do you all think of the selections in Flor's
    Better Than Wool collection?

Hi Tai Moses, I absolutely adore your room and your MCM style!

Love the Flor collection you're considering too...I think these are my faves so far.

Where'd you get your sofa and chairs from btw? Love everything about your space!

Are these too bold of patterns/color for you?

Gotta tell you, though...the existing rug looks fabulous in that space! Just saying '....

I think your rug could be a little larger width past the sofa
The room is plenty large enough. You may consider pulling the rug back under the sofa table and not so close in front of the fire place . These are some rugs from Karastan they carry a lot of different price ranges. You may want to consider looking at a wall to wall carpet and having it made into an area rug and just have it bound .

I could see something like this in the room a little larger (wider) than current

Lol, now I see you are looking for neutrals. I would keep it light... in the silver to cream shades.

I like the ones Avery posted. I think the silver Chevron quarter turned is my favorite. Snow Problem that adalisa frazzini posted is another nice one.

I also really like Fully Barked in Fog (or one of the many other light shades) quarter turned.

or Sew What in Chalk or Pearl quarter turned

or Upcycle in Fawn quarter turned

Any of the stripey squares in a light neutral quarter turned would look good in your space and keep the MCM vibe. Looks like you have lots of choices.

I also think the rug needs to be wider. Either a larger rug or an 8x10 turned the other way so that only the front feet of the sofa are on it.

Adalisa, I like that Frost rug, and also Retroearth's picks for the Fully Barked and the Chevron styles. How to choose?!

Avery, the blue sofa and green chair are both from ThriveFurniture.com (highly recommend them for affordable MCM-style pieces), and the orange rocker was a splurge from Design Within Reach.

Lizzie, I used to like the maroon rug in that space too—until I painted the fireplace wall pumpkin-orange and then the rug just seemed like too much, and too dark.

Hi Tai, thank you for the info! I figured the sofa and chair may have been from Thrive (have been looking at them as well for some potential pieces, so thank you for the high recommendation)..... and I love your "splurge" too from DWR! Fantastic choices.

I like your idea for a more neutral look for a rug and also agree with retroearth that something with a subtle retro/MCM pattern within the rug would be a perfect choice for your space.

Here's a few pictures I found of rooms that remind me of yours.....maybe just for more inspiration/ideas plus more "eye candy" for the rest of us MCM fans! :-)

Avery, those are gorgeous, and the last one has my colors! Thank you for finding these images. Makes me think I can't go wrong with a creamy neutral.

Promise to post photos of the LR after we put the new rug in. Stay tuned.

Oh you're welcome Tai....your room is such an inspiration in itself.....so it wasn't that difficult finding Houzz (professionally-designed) rooms that reminded me of yours to begin with! :-)

And yes please post as your room progresses. I agree, you most certainly can't go wrong with what you have in mind for a rug!

Hello all: Just following up with an After photo to wrap things up. We chose this rug from Flor's Better Than Wool collection. I'm very happy with it—it really brightens the space and makes the room look bigger. Many thanks for your helpful feedback!
