People see a shelf by a staircase and automatically start setting things it, eventually scarring the painted surface. Pick out an aesthetically pleasing tray for the shelf so people can safely place items there and hang a piece of art on the wall behind. It would be a great utilitarian design.

Alternatively, I will often use layered candles in a simple off-white. Placing them on an ornate tray or glass that will catch the light from the window will add a bit of interest.

Those niches are my biggest pet peeve! Why are they there?!!! Ok, I'll calm down. Keep it simple--very simple, because whatever you put there will have to be dusted regularly as it's on display. A tall, sculptural piece would fill the space. A plant that can thrive in that light, in a pretty pot would be nice. A small piece of artwork, hung on either "wall" would work, too. To be a tad more creative, paint the tiny wall and shelf a really fab color and hang something precious on top. Would really draw the eye. Still have to dust. :-P
