Need help coordinating a kitchen backsplash

We just bought our first home and would like to add a kitchen backsplash. The cabinets are dark, as are the counter tops, so we were thinking of using a light backsplash that would contrast enough with the wall to the side to be noticeable and bring out the cream colored tile of the floor.

Originally we were thinking of also having an accent strip of a darker design that contrasted the overall light tiling, but looking at the picture I'm wondering if that might be a bad idea since the cabinets are not raised. Would an accent strip make it feel cramped?

Any design ideas are appreciated... most everything in Google seems to pair a light counter top with a dark cabinets, so I'm at a loss.

If you are leaving the 4" splash, I would not add an accent strip. It would look very crowded, and likely be right where all your electrical is. Definitely go with the lighter color.

are you going to leave the 4" granite splash? I would definitely go with a lighter color backsplash to give contrast between the countertop and the cabinet. Also a white splash will allow the electrical to blend in and not stand out.

I do plan on leaving the 4" granite splash. Do you think the backsplash should be completely light (I see white/cream mosaics), or would one that is predominantly light with a small amount of dark (a few brown tiles, maybe) work best? Thank you so much.

I'd go with whatever color is lightest in your counter top. Vinning has a great point about the electrical wire.

I agree with Vining. I love to make the electricals disappear. Use off-white porcelain subway tile in a running bond pattern, going horizontally. go shiny & use a soft beige grout. Timeless, classic & you will never be sorry.

There are many options. Don't let the worry of matching your plug covers to the tile. There is this really fantastic company called Legrand that makes some of the nicest design friendly options to hide the plugs or make the part of the design. http://www.legrand.us/

Remove the 4" back splash. Cream subway tile with a darker grout. Since your granite is rather busy keep the back splash simple. What do your floors look like?
