kitchen cabinets --- minimizing regrets

the GIVENS;

small L-shaped kitchen is part of small everything room (almost ready for drywall)

attempting theme of urban farmhouse (nothing country)

*natural maple flooring purchased and on site

minimal uppers....shaker style preferred

*stainless appliances purchased inc. very mod chimney style hood

very small island coming later. - perhaps a piece of bright furniture

have NOT selected granite

the QUESTION:

will i regret natural maple cabinets? originally wanted gray but do not like either the painted or stained available from the local store to which i am totally committed, can not go the custom paint route.

other choice is dark cabinetry...cocoa by shiloh... but i worry that the dark cabinets will look.....well, dark

thank you very much

It will look something like this. Do you think this is something you will like or regret?

We have natural maple cabinets in the bathrooms against a dark tile floor. I had briefly considered natural maple cabinets in the kitchen but the floor is a mid-toned maple and for me that would have been just too much wood with little contrast. But that's just me and how I envisioned it.

Why are you asking if you might regret natural maple? What is it you have a concern about?

I love the natural maple, and wouldn't get dark cabinets unless the room had a lot of natural light.

I looked at the cocoa and I am not sure I would like that particular brown with the yellowish maple floors (?) These cabinets are very high gloss but this seems to be the overall tone.

I have natural maple cabinets and love them. I had painted our old cabinets white but when we remodeled wanted something different. I have a small, north-facing galley kitchen so needed to keep the cabinets light.

joaniepoanie, what color is your floor?

i love natural maple floors. i love natural maple cabinets. am just worried that both together may be too much, but i did like the photo palimpsest posted. probably everything depends on the overall light, the granite, and the backsplash! appreciate all thoughts thanks.

This is an old picture - my kitchen with maple cabinets and maple floors. I liked the continuity and flow but I also like floors that contrast with cabinets - it all depends. Both can be beautiful.

Mainewire......my floor is gray tile. Granite has grays and the honey tones of the cabinets. As in Pal's picture I used the granite for the BS too to keep it simple in my small kitchen.

I recently did a little 'facelift' to my kitchen by painting my 24 year old maple cabinets. I just wanted a change after that time, there was nothing wrong with them, but here is a Maine kitchen from the early 90s with natural maple cabinets. I hope it helps. The floors were original Douglas fir that was under the vinyl that was pulled up back then.

An urban farmhouse that isn't country.... So not farmhouse at all? ;-) That made me giggle a little, I'm sorry!

I like the lighter, brighter colors in the first picture, with the maple cabinets and floors. I am partial to that look, because it is similar to what I have. I dislike the dark cabinet and floor trend. It reminds me too much of the dark wood from the 70s era. With the lighter look, your stainless steel appliances will take the stage.

If you want more contrast for a contemporary look, you could go with a darker countertop.

I think you will regret it if you buy something because it is the trend now, because that will change.

Go with what you like, not what is trendy (unless that's what you like). We installed light color cabinets 6 years ago and I am still simply overjoyed with how the kitchen looks and feels. We chose a light color counter and medium tone floor. It's not very trendy and not extreme, which i think gives it enduring broader appeal.

Just a note from personal experience -- our loft has older natural shaker maple cabinets and natural maple floors. They've aged at different rates, due to different finishes. I'm guessing Shiloh's finish will hold up much better.

I love natural maple cabinets! I am a person who likes my house light and bright. Dark cabinets and paints do look very rich and elegant if you have a lot of light. We chose our light maple cabinets (sort of inbetween natural and toffee) and I love them. I have a light ceramic floor too. But my counters are dark, I felt I needed that contrast. Yes, the trend seems to be white cabinets today, or a dark espresso. Both are lovely, but our last kitchen cabs were dark and I wanted a change, my husband didn't want painted cabinets so we went with the light maple. Not todays trend, but who cares? Much as a white kitchen is timeless, eventually it will give way to whatever the next new trend is. Trying to keep up with trends is hard, unless you want to remodel a kitchen every 8 yrs or so.

thanks again! akaypick is right.... the farmhouse thing is way off.. maybe folk victorian (see photo) ? but the interior will definitely be contemporary and i am definitely a trend-bucker! good point from booster about the different woods changing at different rates. maybe then i'll end up with the contrast some of my pals are promoting. have to decide very soon so....... again, thank you.

I had one house that had natural maple cabinets with natural maple floors, then moved to a house with oak floors stained a similar color as the cherry cabinets... I was very ready for a little contrast between floors and cabinets!!! contrast is what I would choose as long as the dark cabinets and floors look nice together color wise.

Have you looked at the grey on site, with a floor sample at ninety degrees? I don't like all that wood. Especially in an urban non-country farmhouse. : )

I think Maple would look great. I know these floors look cherry, but thought otherwise the kitchen was inspiring.

Have you looked at lots of photos to help decide how much contrast you might like? I think the image posted by 293summer is stunning -- the cabinets look darker than maple though? Our old kitchen with natural maple cabs looked a lot like the first image posted by palimpsest, only with a brown slab counter/backsplash. For me that was brown overload, so we went the opposite direction in our new kitchen. If you took the first palimpsest image, put some rugs on the floor and used a different counter and backsplash, would that be enough contrast for you? Good luck.

oops, my thank-yous and comments from this morning weren't posted. maybe it is a sign.....

Here's a picture of the kitchen of a house we rented five or six years ago. Even though it's not really my style I loved this kitchen. It was spook functional and just felt right. Backsplash is beadboard, the color of the walls is a really rich plum.
