I agree with laurief_gw completely! If food cost and purchase price are big factors in your choice of breed, it may well mean that you won't be able to afford the ongoing costs associated with owning a dog... license, vaccinations, Vet checks, treating medical issues that may crop up.

I am not sure why you seemingly have not considered the possibility of rescuing a dog - possibly saving a dog's life. That said, a rescue dog will also need those same Vet checks, vaccinations, etc.

It certainly does sound like you should at least consider a cat, bird, or a rodent pet... and recognize that all of those critters have medical and other needs.

Consider not buying a dog but rather adopting a senior dog. That would fit your needs best. Of course there are high energy dogs, you'd want to avoid those breeds...probably a Spitz would fall into the high energy category.

Also, it wouldn't even have to be a senior dog but rather an older dog that's gotten past the puppy energy stage. I had a toy poodle that never really went on long walks or outside to play but ran and ran and ran to play fetch which is still good exercise for a toy poodle. She was a wonderful companion dog!

Please, don't get a dog right now. It's not fair to any dog, no matter if they can be an "apartment" dog.

Wait until you have the time and room for a dog.

You sound like you really don't know what owning a dog takes (your criteria are ridiculous). There's no way to tell if any dog you get will be highly negatively affected by being stuck in a small apartment all day long, and your dog may suffer, or worse, you'll wind up giving it back or placing it in an already too-crowded pound, where its future could be a death sentence.

I would parse my words more kindly, but that wouldn't be doing you or a potential dog any favors. I have owned dogs for many years, and the sacrifices, while never a second thought in my mind, have been great.

OP, since you also posted another thread in which you appeal for help to convince your parents to let you get a dog, & since you live in an apartment, my advice is to let it go for the time being.

Your parents may realize how much work & how much risk (chewed walls, urine-soaked carpet, etc) a dog in the apartment would mean.

If there's a shelter somewhere near your home, you might volunteer there after school or on week-ends;
get familiar with "life with dogs", & do a good turn at the same time.

& if there are people in the complex who have dogs, you might start a dog-walking service.

You seem to not have the time or day to take your dog out daily for walks and that is more then once aday, take them out too to do their business, you want a stuffed animal that sits there and have to do nothing with. They have muscles and need to use them,. they need to get out too, why don't you sit all the time in a room and go anywhere, they go out for car rides, are a pack animal and you are their pack and if you leave it, that isn't good, you have to make sure its trained and that means trainers to help you with anything that comes up or just train if they are puppies. Even small dogs need to be put on the ground and way they go, they love being around others outside and I see them when I was a dog owner tiny ones running and wagging and greeting dogs and owners. Pets are not to buy and sit there looking cute, they are wanting their needs met. If you aren't home or can meet the needs what they need, then don't get one, its not fair. I see and hear too many pets being thrown in garages, chained outside and stuck in laundry rooms,etc, not walked at all and pee pads and what a terrible life that is. YOU spend time with them and dogs you do alot, they aren't stuffed toys to have that lay there, terrible life that is. Or get an older dog then that sleeps more but even they need to be taken for walks and outside to other places, car rides. Change your life or decide its not for me until I can be there for my pet.

I have to agree, it doesnt sound like a dog would fit your life style right now. You must think of whats best for the dog first.
