Yeah, I did consider that. Right now he keeps his two bottles (shampoo and body wash) at one of the corners of the tub (because he has no niche). Wonder what he'd say if I said "now you can't put your shampoo and body wash bottles in there, it will ruin the look" LOL I DID think of something tonight that he's probably hoping I won't think about. He's tearing out the side wall where the niche will be. That will so uncomplicate wiring for a light there :)

I suggest to first check with your code officer to see if this would even be allowed. There are strict requirements regarding lighting in a shower/bath tub.

That is not a good light choice in my mind for a shower niche. I build lighting into every other shower niche these days but I separate the light from the water with waterproofing and vapour proofing materials.

I also prefer to defuse the light with white laminate glass. If you check out my photo's online you will see dozens of examples of shower lights.

All the lights I show above are low voltage. They operate via a 12 volt power supply and use a RGB controller. Also low voltage.

This was a fun use of Fiber optic lighting. I set these into the stacked stone on a 6" grid. Used my laser level to keep everything straight. The stainless strip up top is a water fall feature.

I do not think lighting is allowed in showers except for the basic overhead fixture that is wet rated. All this work you see from me and others is to knew to have any guidelines.

The TTMAC and TCNA have zero recommendations for light installations (waterproofing of them), on that note recessed shower niches as well have no guidelines. Same with windows and sky lights.

No specs on floating benched either.

The rules apply to the most basic of bathrooms. If you want a little bling you need to bend a few rules!

Here's a pic from my Ideabook that I really like. It would not be directly visible from the room so clutter would not be "highlighed", but it could be a nice nightlight for the space.

I really don't like John's lighting at all. Maybe it's just the colors but it seems tacky IMO. But to each his own.

I'm sure the lights would have to be sealed and rated for wet areas. Not sure its any different than the lights you would put in the celing of a shower from a code standpoint.

I like the example from numbersjunkie, but you'll notice they did not use the niche lighting to highlight random primary-colored plastic bottles. (But surely your DH would be willing to switch to products that color-coordinated with the tile, right? Right? OK, maybe not.) I agree the top example looks good while empty or if used to highlight a decorative object, but that might not be what he has in mind?

With regards to lighting, I thought wet-rated meant wet-rated. I never came across any distinction between "wet for outdoors" vs "wet for showers." I did use a wet-rated downlight over the tub as a reading light/accent light, but it is within an arm's reach of the shower so had to be wet-rated (different from "damp").

"Bending a few rules" is likely to get you red tagged by the inspector. Rightly so. Just because the voltage is low doesn't mean that it isn't required to carry a wet rating.

I put a limestone shower in my last home. While the niche wasn't lit I didn't want to trash the look with a lot of miscellaneous bottles. I kept "products" to a minimum and poured things into frosted glass pump bottles.

If DH doesn't install a light in the niche (and I have my doubts it will happen) I CAN buy stick up LED lights. It might look hideous, it might not. They're small and some are quite thin.

Green and Greeny Blue seam to work best for my wife and eldest daughter. I don't get headaches that bad so I don't know from personal experience.

While it's dangerous to install lighting in a shower, another option is to use an in-shower lighted mirror like this one from Electric Mirror. The LED lights have a dimmer - making it subtle enough to light the area and also very useful for men that want to shave in the shower.
