size of area rug?

sooo, i know the rules about 2 feet or less from the walls and such but i'm thinking that this pattern might overwhelm if it's any bigger and also, we do not have all the furniture that will be in this room yet...what do you think? Can we swing this 8x10 or do we need to go for a 9x12? The room is 11x18.

I think a 9 x12 would fit much better and the room could handle it.

Hi Aleia, first of all, love your choices....sofa is gorgeous and I agree the rug colors aren't overpowering at all.

I think the rug could work...maybe trying pulling in the sofa on the rug a bit more and away from the wall. You'll probably have to "scooch" (forward) the table a little bit to do this. When you try this, keep the rug centered with the sofa (and the sofa centered to the wall).

What is the focal point in this space? In other words, is the sofa the focal point or is the furniture grouping oriented around (or at) a focal point? Would you mind taking a couple other pictures of the room....like views of the other side?

Is the ottoman staying with the chair? One photo shows the two together and the other doesn't. Are you planning on adding more seating? Knowing what the details of what you have envisioned for this room can help determine if the rug is appropriately sized or not.

If you don't plan on adding anymore big pieces (ie chairs), them IMO the rug is ok. If more seating, etc. will be added now or in the future, then you may need at least a 9x12.

we are definitely planning on adding more chairs. the chair with the ottoman will probably not stay in the room... we are working on the room. had not really thought of a focal point quite yet. we definitely need some art on the walls and maybe a bookcase or two on the wall the currently has the black leather chair and tripod lamp. please ignore the red sheet taped to the window...we are going to bring the gray paint to the edge of the wall with the door then hang curtains in the "near" future

I totally agree with Avery!! Pull your rug out about 6" and then bring the sofa out from wall to meet it. Sounds like you have a good plan, keep posting!

Thank you for the extra photos....it gives a better perspective of the space. And now seeing the other side of the room (especially based on the 1st picture in your last post) it looks like the rug you currently have fits well in the space.

Either way, your room looks like it'll be a fun room to decorate and see the transformation of. What will the main function be of this room? Knowing that will help to determine the room's focal point and furniture layout.

Here's some pictures for you for more ideas and inspiration. I think the 2nd one has your rug? (If so, you may have seen this one already.)
