I'd change the cabinet handles to repeat the faucet: chrome color. photo 1.

It is good to repeat colors on the wall. I think the previous owner tried to repeat the gray-blue of the tile for the wall paint. It doesn't work though (it's too dark as you said).

I'd go very light on the walls in this kitchen: an off white. Is there an off white anywhere that you can match? I'm wondering if the tile grout can be matched. Make the wall paint a few shades lighter than the grout. The grout color but lighter, might be a good off white for this kitchen.

Pick up a paint sample folder of all shades of only whites. Choose 2 or 3 & buy sample paint cans to paint on poster boards to place around the room to look at different times of the day.

If your cabinet style is still available & you need some extra storage I would purchase a double cabinet to have installed above the refrigerator. They can take it up almost to the crown & have one as deep as your frig front is. Add so much more storage for you.

Also add under cabinet LED lighting & have it put on a dimmer. Check Ikea. Brighten up the room so much more.

I see a light to med muted green like SW Sheraton Sage or Lemon Verbena to bring out the tones in the countertop.

I have cherry cabinets, not quite as dark as yours and used a warm creamy white( yellow undertones). I think something like this would brighten your kitchen and goes nicely with the cabinets and floor warm tones.

Actually I like Sheri's idea. Forget matching the gray grout undertone (as I suggested) and look for a paint that enhances the wood tones in the kitchen. You can experiment with paint colors this way: http://www.lindaholtinteriors.com/2011/07/testing-wall-color-101/

Our light green walls look beautiful with the same cabinets and floors.

Same issue but we have wallpaper not dark paint. Definitely lighten it up! I'm trying both Benjamin Moore Barely Beige and Sherwin Williams Colonnade Gray. To my surprise the light gray isn't fighting the cherry like I thought it would. Paint samples are cheaper and less work than repainting a second time to put some up on the wall and live with them. One will eventually speak to you! I'm beginning to think cherry cabinets are the hardest to find a good paint color for without making the house look dated!

Also, if you like the red in the cabinets, then choose a soft green. If you want to play it down, I was told to go with a yellower undertone but not a bright yellow. I still want something fresher so we might go gray. Kind of scary!
