Rather than painting the countertops, consider new updated laminate, a promo tile backsplash, and painted cabinets if you want to paint them. More comfortable stools at the island, perhaps even upholstered, and extending the island further toward the sliders, would give you more prep space and storage. You could use stock cabinetry for the added base. You also need much more lighting over the island and prep space, if you can do it.

I have found that you can paint countertops to look like granite which I thought would be cool to save some money etc. I am just not sure what to do or what colors to paint the cabinets. If I paint them white I will have to paint the trim throughout the whole house white which I don't want to do. I am planning on painting the stools just not sure which colors.

I have very similar cabinets and appliances and am planning on painting the cabinets behr swiss coffee and maybe use a sea glass color scheme backplash, if I can find something stick on, nice and affordable. I have thought about painting countertop also, but scares me!

There are plenty of youtube videos I have watched that look very nice and everyone has had good reviews of doing it.
