Not sure I'd refer to Carpet Beetles as one of the good guys. While the adults do feed on pollen and nectar the larva can be, inside the house, destructive pests.

Umm. I didn't say that carpet beetles are good guys. But since you mention that, outdoors they are inadvertent pollinators in that they might accidentally pollinate while feeding on pollen, an excellent source of protein.
Indoors, their larvae can be truly pestiferous because they may damage certain fabrics.

So, I repeat -- yes, the small multicolored fellow is a carpet beetle.

As for the larger beetle, the image is out-of-focus, and the beetle so well covered with pollen that it's difficult to say what/who it is.

If it's a June beetle, it's early, also it's likely that something else damaged the flower.

Yeah. It's not a May or June beetle. I know what they look like. And, I agree about the damage of the flower...I think that was caused by some scorching temps we had last week.

Anybody else want to weigh in on the first bug? I thought the 2nd pic was pretty good.

Thanks rhizo1. Come to think of it, you're right rhizo1. It's not a bad shot, but for I.D., it is kind of useless. I tried to get a better shot, but I couldn't see the screen with the sun behind me. Plus, the wind was blowing gently in a Cosmos plant...lol. What would you have done to get a better pic for I.D.?

Btw, it did have 2 little points up front like the bumble flower beetle's antennae, but I thought they were hinged legs/knees. Sort of like a grasshopper, but a lot more higher up the thorax. I guess they could've been antennae.

I am nearly 100% sure that those first 3 pics are Japanese beetles. They're the source of the damage on your flower there. They're ravenous. It's covered with pollen so it's not showing its usual colors, but after picking hundreds of them off my roses last year, I'm pretty certain.

Don't bother with insecticides... you have to hit them directly for them to work, and they kill off the bees and all the good bugs. Don't do traps either... it'll just attract more to your yard.

Your best bet is to pick them off by hand and toss them in a bucket of soapy water (wear gloves if you're squeamish like me). I hear they're less active in morning so easier to pick off, but I didn't have much trouble with the afternoon either. I was more likely to hold the dish right under the bug and knock it off into the water, which didn't give them a chance to fly away.

Their scent attracts even more of them, so it's important to do the best you can to control their numbers. They're completely awful and ruin everything. Good luck!

Lol, I'm 100% sure that it's not a Japanese beetle. Wrong time of year, very much the wrong location, and wrong shape.

Kevin, sometimes just other angles can help with an ID. If I were trying to get a good picture, I'd probably grab the beetle, stick it in the freezer for half an hour to slow it down for awhile, then photograph it in good, bright, indirect light with a coin in the image for scale. ;-)

Beetles do often have interesting antennae! And very useful for ID purposes, as you know.

LOL... Thanks Atharaenea. I appreciate the input, but I think Rhizo_1 is correct...I don't get Jap beetles here. I used to have my location listed in my username(San Diego CA) , but Rhizo1 knows it from my posts of yore.
