I am kind of perplexed that you think it would look odd. To me it is kind of a classic look. Think slate floor, natural cherry cabinets, soapstone or other black counter- that is a classic look.

I also feel it creates real cohesion. In your case I do like the creamstone the best, I think it works beautifully with your floor and I would not do a matching back splash. i would use tile for that.

Well, I think it depends. If you have a counter that is one pattern of Calcatta marble, and tile that is also Calcatta marble but a different amount of grey/streaking/pattern, I think it could look odd. It depends.

The floor tile is on top; two (of the many counter options we are consider) are on the threshold below; Creamstone on the left and Forest Snow on the right. The tile on top is our kitchen backsplash tile, which can be ignored.
