I would paint the window trim white, keep walls light, consider switching out to a white toilet (or if just the lid is discolored replace that).

The great retro tiles are worth saving for a truly unique look. I would get a white toilet. could y ou possibly shoot more pictures showing ll walls, sink, light fixtures and tub/shower?

I guess it'll depend on the design or theme that you like but.... Beadboard painted white for example looks fantastic in a bathroom. Take off the wall tile and mastic / thinset and install the beadboard so that the finished height (with rail molding at the top) doesn't infringe upon an existing or a new vanity mirror...... Approximately where the burgundy bullnose tile is now. Paint the drywall above the beadboard. If there is tile in the tub or shower this would be the time to change that too.

Looks great. I would replace the toilet with a burgundy one to match the sink, otherwise one that is styled to match but in white. A new shower curtain would help the tub or get a new white one to match. If you go that far, I would replace the sink with white and paint the trim white. Pink and white is a great look for a bathroom (and I say that as a hetero male).

I've mentioned this before but my husband and I had a similar bathroom in our first home. We placed bead board right over the tile and that was that. We didn't have to gut the tile. Just painted it white, placed the molding on the top and it was great.

The pink sink you posted it exactly what my sink looks like except in burgundy.

I agree with others. If you like the look of beadboard, cover it. (there is a paint made to stick to them too. I used it on a flip but can't attest to how long it holds up. Looked great though!)

Changing the tile floors would really change the room too.. I just tiled my tiny mb in black 2' hexagons. I love the black. Mine is glossy but a matte would be gorgeous! Used black grout to keep the scrubbing minimal.

it is gorgeous tile. It can be made to work for a really unique look. I have heard form any a houzzer about tile paint in a high use or water area and the tile peels

Yes, I've tiled a few rooms before this one. The hexagons were by far the most difficult and time consuming Had my husband cut them for me...or I'd be short a few fingers. If you choose to tile something yourself watch a few videos and read up first! Good luck with your project!

I have a rental house that has green and yellow tile where yours is pink. I do have a pedestal sink, which updates it some. But, one of my renters made window and shower curtains out of a big green, yellow and pink plaid. It is very festive, it is made out of cotton, and it takes the eye away from the tile. Very imaginative.

I am sooooooo very I saw this post!! We just bought a house built in the 50s as ND the bathrooms look the same!!

It looks like it is in great shape, what's the reason to change it? Is the shower/tub bad? I think the sink is amazing. The tiles look clean and so does the grout. Do you really dislike it the way it is?

My husband's grandma painted her burgundy white (there is a special paint for tiles). it looked nice but we left ours alone. I would paint the window trims white.

I actually love the sink. Myself or my husband are not crazy about the pink tiles so trying to figure out what to do with it.

I would embrace it and leave it alone.

Different wall tile (stay with the floor tile, because it's brilliant) or wainscotting on the walls if that pleases you, or completely remove it and just continue the drywall to the floor with a new baseboard. Replace toilet for efficiency's sake, and I would personally consider getting a white sink from the IKEA ones which aren't too expensive and that would be floating which will let the tile show. Keep the bathroom mainly white on white with a hint of pink being in the floor. You could paint that window trim a light rosé if it suits you. Accessorise (curtains, towels etc) with pinks/reds to match.

I'm currently remodeling my bathroom, which is very similar to yours. My home was built in 1958 and the previous owners removed the original sink & toilet and had the wall tile painted white. It was originally peachy/pink with a brown bullnose; the same color combo as the floor tile. I'm having all of the all wall tile removed, which a tedious & messy process due to the fact the tile is imbedded in plaster and wire mesh. The bead-board will replace the wall tile in bathroom area and subway tile, to the ceiling in shower. Removing the floor tile is NOT an option for me since it is set in concrete. I would need a jackhammer to get it out. And since the floor tile is not only ugly but in poor condition, I'll skim coat the grout lines and install a good sheet vinyl. I just started the renovation otherwise I'd post some pictures. Good Luck!

I like the retro, but understand the desire to bring it a little current. Consider using a rustoleum kit to change the color scheme: black accents on white tiles (and same with the floors (or if you were super meticulous, keep the tri color pattern in the floor, white, gray black). Change out the toilet (and I assume tub) to white and change the sink to the similar (30's?) style with the metal legs and white porcelin sink. White around the windows. The tiles and sink will keep it retro, but changing the color will make it more livable with a modern-retro look instead of a 'forgotten about' look.

Michelle - did you remove the pink tile prior to placing the white subway tile and board? If you did, was there metal mesh and concrete?

The pink tiles were placed using mastic. The floor tiles which remain were set in mud with wire mesh.

I like what you have done Michelle. I fear our bathrooms (1 pink, 1 Aqua, 1 blue) will have metal mesh and concrete walls behind tile.

this is the original 1956 mirror in our bathroom. we have the same flooring as yours too. our toilet and sink is white though. ignore the stenciling (done years ago when it was popular) and our shower curtain.
