Kitchen design confusion....what would a TKO do?

We're reusing some of our cabinets, which will have new doors and be painted, and are keeping a portion of our L in the current layout. And it's causing an issue I didn't anticipate. Hopefully you can see it in the picture of my current ugliest kitchen ever but it's kinda hard to tell at this angle.

The sink isn't centered on the window which has never bothered me. However, I'm switching from this 32" double-bowl to a 24" single bowl for our prep sink and wanted to center the sink so that I could hang a pretty pendant where that ugly light is (the light is centered). But to do that, I need to make the sink very un-centered in the sink base cabinet installing it all the way to the right of the cabinet.

Would you:

  1. Center the sink and pendant on the window and not fuss about the sink not being centered in the cabinet?
  2. Center the sink in the cabinet, center the pendant on the window, and not fuss about the sink and pendant not lining up with each other?
  3. Or do you have a different solution I haven't thought of?

I'm not super concerned with symmetry if function is improved by having things off-center. But in this case, function isn't impacted. It's all just a visual thing. And this is the type of stuff that I have a hard time making decisions on. I'm not a good decorator.

I really appreciate your help so thanks in advance!

are you going to prep to the left of this sink?

that IS not the ugliest kitchen ever. I've seen much worse. My last one was much worse than any I've seen elsewhere. Yours looks to be better than the one I have now...

do you like the wire baskets for your taters and onions? I have one of those (bought decades ago). I haven't found it yet but keep hoping I will for my potatoes and onions. I haven't seen it in many, many years.

I'd go with your second option. I don't think the sink needs to line up with the pendant, since it's a prep sink, not a focal point.

Prep will be to the right of the sink. The range is to the right of that (off camera). The DW is moving to a new peninsula next to my new, 32" single sink. I'm soooooo excited for that. Not sure if I'm more excited about the huge sink or getting the DW out of the prep area. Both changes are going to be great!

I find it hard to believe there could be an uglier kitchen anywhere. I think you're just saying that so I won't feel so bad, lol. Maybe we should have a contest?

We actually use the basket for fruits. Potatoes and onions go in a basket in a lower cabinet. We have such limited counter space right now that the basket really helps keep counter space free. I found it online; don't recall where. I really wanted a silver one but couldn't find one.

Any input on my pendant issue?

jlc712, actually, the window itself is a focal point. Does that make a difference? The ugly window covering will be gone. We only need it to shade the TV but we will not have the TV or any of the other appliance clutter there after the remodel. So the window, the view outside of it, and the pendant will be a focal point. But I suppose all that will make the off-centered sink insignificant, right?

Can the sink cabinet be moved center to window since the DW will move?

Edit: I just saw your exact cabinets on the show, Fixer Upper and thought of you...LOL!

! Also wanted to add that you have done some amazing plans for others, I am sure whatever you do to your kitchen will be amazing!

Sorry: I'm not great about what things are called, and my drawing toolbox is limited, but what about suspending a two-pendant(bulb)/one-fixture centered across the window, so that one light's over the sink and the other's over the prep area to the right?

In answer to your actual question, I'm not sure a pendant light makes sense over a prep sink the way it does over a focal point clean-up sink. I think I'd center the sink on the cabinet and not do a pendant in front of that window. Just an unobtrusive can wherever you need light in that area.

It's common for prep sinks to not be centered under a window, so I don't think that'd be odd.

Jillius Lolololololol! Now I need to find our befores because it may trump you both!

Oh my, Jillius! What happened to the harvest gold fridge? Pity it died an early death.

Ssg7741, ha! Perhaps it eloped with the dishwasher?

It least they were trying to tie it in with the white sink! The white actually draws my eye away from the gold teapots and excrement analogy!

Back to funky's delemma...If you cannot change the cabs, and don't want to draw the eye to areas of concern, I agree that a pendant light will do just that.

It says... look at me! Aren't I pretty? Now, look at what is below me....if that is "off"....Pendant glory, window focal point, is not as glorious as is could be.

Function is a light above the sink, but a pendant light may draw attention to what you are trying to hide.

I'm feeling a great urge to move the window...

The window is a focal point and I'm not liking how it crowds the end wall of cabinets. The placement makes me think that I'm leaning to the left.

I would try to fix that and then see how the existing cabinets/ sink centering might be worked into the plan.

Maybe you could consider changing out just those cabinets so that the sink cabinet lines up where you want it to...maybe even finding some used cabinets that you could reuse just the boxes since you are doing new doors and painting.

Two thoughts for you funky. It would bother me if the prep sink were off center in the cabinet so I'd center it in the cabinet.

I'd also say that a pendant is the wrong lighting application -- IMO mind -- because the vertical will immediately call attention to the whole issue.

I would get a different type of task light that won't call attention to the sink placement.

Yup, I would do 2 can/recessed lights and no pendant to draw attention to the non-centering, but just to leave the focus to the window itself.

Without an overall layout to go by, this suggestion may not work. Look to the cabinets to the right of the DW. Is there a 12''ish one? You could move it to the left of the sink cabinet and move the sink cabinet down. Or, you could create an open cabinet there with baskets just by shifting the whole run down to the right. The whole point of paint tying everything together is that it gives you the freedom to rearrange, and mix things up! Post a wider shot, and let's see if we can't think outside those boxes.

Since the dishwasher is moving this is the time to center that sink base and sink with the window. You won't be happy otherwise. I assume that is why you are asking the question. AND now is the time to do it. Good luck with your project. Planning is the fun part. The actual work not so much. But now is the time to tackle those issues so you don't regret them later.

If a pendant, can't you just swag it over the sink?

I know you've spent a lot of time on your layout, and I would agree that the sink should be centered in the cabinet, and the lighting should be cans. I don't think I would want anything to detract from the window, not even a pretty fixture.

I agree with sherri1058 and would skip the fixture.

I agree, that is not the ugliest kitchen ever. By a long shot! Look at the size of that wonderful window!

Just brainstorming. If the kitchen window is a focal point, and you want more than cans, I am thinking about a minimalistic light fixture that spans the entire length of the window (and lights up the sink and the prep area to the right.) Maybe a row of very small mini-pendants, shortened...something very simple/minimal looking, that would coordinate with your two pendants over the peninsula.

I was thinking a fixture that matched the length of the window exactly would give it a custom and modern look, and (it seems to me) it would emphasize the window itself, instead of the items below (sink, counter.) This puts you into the arena of custom made or DIY light fixtures, but I know you guys are handy. So just thinking outside of the box a bit, here's a link to an article on building your own LED light fixture, which you could make any size you wanted. The examples shown below aren't exactly beautiful, but you could take this idea in a lot of different directions with a little creativity for the material used to build the box:

Jillius - I had the twin to your kitchen! Same colours except not only did I have teapots but I also had fruits on my wallpaper and the floor - same squares but I had the poor cousin to yours. The actual stamp into the floor to show off the pattern was off by 1/2" so that the stamp didn't match up with the pattern. A very cool look.

Up thread someone mentioned doing 2 pendants which I think could work. Put one over your prep area and then the other one equal distance from the window edge on the left side. It allows the center of the window to be a focal point and the pendant lights will act as a frame for it and give you some nice light.

agree with either cans or more than one light.
And I had a kitchen worse than that, too!

Oh, I'm so pleasantly surprised that I have responses on Easter. You are all true TKOs!! And I thank each of your for your contribution. I was going to respond to each of you individually but realized that would be a VERY long post. So I'll just try to touch touch on the main points. Even if I decide not to use a certain piece of advice, it's always worth it to read it and ponder it. Some of you have given me ideas in the past that I originally rejected but after further consideration, realized it was right. So what I'm writing here is my kneejerk response but we're going out of town on Wednesday for 12 days which will give me more time to ponder your suggestions. So it's possible I'll change my mind. It's been known to happen a few times, lol.

If my kitchen isn't the ugliest, it's in the Top 10. Jillius's kitchen is bad but I'm kinda digging that hidden bar allowing you to surprise guests on special occasions with its groovy wonder.

Moving the window isn't an option due to glassblocks, now covered by backsplash, that will eventually be revealed. I'm not inclined to move the sink cabinet to the right to center it as it will shrink the prep[ counter (between sink and range) and I really value every inch. Also, I never realized the cabinet was not centered on the sink during the last 44 years since the 1971 remodel my parents did on this kitchen. (Yes, I have my mom to thank for the ugliness. What was she thinking?) So the cabinet being centered really isn't an issue for me.

I do agree that centering the sink in the cabinet is important so we'll be doing that. Thanks for helping me sort that issue out.

I like the idea of 2 pendants. We've decided not to put pendants on the peninsula because they would detract from the new hood for the range so over this sink is really my only available option for pretty lighting. I never thought of two off-centered there so I appreciate that idea so I appreciate that idea. I also love the DIY LED light mudhouse shared. I'll play with both those ideas when the time comes and if it doesn't look right, I'll just go with flush lights there.

The main thing I thank you for is talking me about of not centering the sink in the base. It was a silly idea but I'm braindead with planning and it was the best I was coming up with. I'm so glad you saved me from it.

    Happy Easter!
