What are stem cuttings, and from what kind of plant? You are in Adenium forum so I assume you are talking about an adenium. Could you upload pictures please.

It is Adenium obesum.

I saved the stems that had not rotted yet.

I read online I just put the cut end of cutting in soil. Presumably prayer is part of the recipe.

Oh, okay. I think I can help a little. It would be beneficial to dip the cut end into a rooting powder (usual ones have fungicide) before planting in soil (follow directions). Water by placing pot in a tray of water for about 1/2 hour. Do not water again until the top of soil is dry to the touch, or look, or weight. Then neglect them for awhile. Worked for me! Then again, I raised mine outdoors where they get some tropical breezes and occasional rain.

But of course, I am saying this from the tropics--others here in the forum may have a better answer for you in your zone and/or your preferred habitat/culture for your Adeniums in your home.

Trying to root the cuttings are not easy. Only small percents of my cuttings live.

It is funny, I just looked at the cuttings that are just sitting on a shelf not in soil and they look alive, perky and ok for now. So interesting. I did want to see its flowers, and the plant was of a size to make quite a few this year.

I will admit, only about half of my cuttings made it eventually. But I did neglect them for 6 years and they prospered on their own--though no flowers appeared until I rescued them and fed fertilizer.

I've personally never been able to root adenium cuttings, but my mother does it the same way she roots African violet leaves, in a fine medium like peat or vermiculite kept damp. She also places them under a grow light indoors until they are definitely rooted. I think she only lost one of several cuttings last year this way. Good luck!
