Subway tile in this master shower and bath?

This is one of the only pictures I have but we are purchasing this home and need to update the shower enclosure and surrounding tile. The travertine on the floors is nice hit the white square tiles need to go.

Thoughts on using white subway tile with a mushroom colored grout on the tub face and shower and a frameless shower enclosure? I was also thinking of just taking the shower enclosure off completely since there is all tile around it and a tub next to it with no bare walls.

My thought is that you already have enough white in the room. Why don't you install staggered travertine for the shower walls and 2x2" small tiles for the shower pan. The grout should be slightly darker than the tile so it does not look dirty. I would stay away from dark grout lines as the eyes will only travel there and not to the whole room. I would add a niche for shampoo etc. as big as you can have and tile the interior with the same 2x2" tile. I would also do a white shutter with a divider rail so you can leave the top open for light and the bottom closed for privacy. They hold up well in wet/humid areas. I totally agree with the frameless shower enclosure.

I should mention the walls will be painted a much lighter ecru or gray and the window treatment will change to a neutral roman shade.

I like Small Bernal's suggestions. Don't do white subway tile at all...keep it classic. It looks like a lovely home you are buying and the travertine tub face would be of equal quality.

Great suggestions! Any recommendations on a source for the travertine? I assume I won't be able to match what I have exactly. Maybe an inspiration picture?

When you are trying to match up with existing things (especially a natural stone) it tends to look better to make it look intentionally different. Since any travertine you get now will likely be different, I would either do lighter or darker, and in a different size/pattern. Otherwise it looks like you tried to match, but it didn't work. I like the idea of a mosaic in both areas, maybe something a little darker.
