success - now, can anyone tell me what this is please? weed or type of grass?? Its just appeared the last couple of weeks, small patch getting bigger!!

It's really hard to see anything but I think I can make out something that looks like a wood rush of some description - Luzula species. They are perennial so they will have been there a while - you just noticed them because they're flowering. Further than that I can't help you. A close up of the flower is vital to id them.

Yes, it's a wood rush species. I can't help you with which one specifically as I don't know N American ones. Getting rid of it would be similar for any of them though, I imagine. Wood Rush
