Thanks for the link. I'm looking for more of a stain effect. I'm curious how this look is created - wood dye, mixed stains, watered down paint?

"stain" my my vocabulary is "anything that colors the wood." This includes dye, pigment, and chemical reactions. Also most of my work is layered and includes products called "stain" and also toners and glazes. It may be that the look you're wanting is not available in one can. You could also use a dark wiping stain like General Finishes' Espresso (very black) and do some glazing over the top with a white glaze to gray it out and accentuate the pores (assuming you are using a ring-porous or semi-porous wood)
