Down comforter only! My husband can't believe we can use it year round. I grew up with them and we have several in our home now.

I'd like to mention that unless you have asthma , no one is allergic to down. Most every one is allergic to feathers. and dust mites! Down is washed ,combed , and sterilized., usually more than once. There is a misconception out there.It's not down they're allergic to--it's dust mites. I sell down and down alternative products, and have gotten quite an education about it. Additionally , people don't realize ,down is washable. and SHOULD be. if it fits in a washer it will work, however ,they take forever to dry. Pillows as well, more often. Pillows need to be washed 3- 4 times a year at least. There are dust mites that get in,no matter what. Few people wash their hair before sleeping. The thread count, means nothing, mites get in anyway. I'f your squeamish about washing down products ,they are dry cleanable. I hope this info helps set the record straight . I have sheet a duvet with out a cove over it a handmade quilt. I keep a blanket if I need it. I like to have a heavy blankets year round I'm just quirky that way!

My husband and I used to sleep using 'traditional bedding': A fitted sheet, top sheet and a down comforter in a duvet. We have three dogs and the most recent addition insists on sleeping right in between us, curled into a 35 lb. ball at about shoulder level. This had us constantly fighting for and adjusting the comforter. It was like the night terrors! All the while our darling Tug sleeping away, oblivious to the problems he was causing. I know! I know! Just kick the dog(s) off the bed! I like the dogs piled everywhere! So in the interest of maintaining the status quo while reclaiming our sleep lives, we've gone Scandinavian!
Two separate duvets, folded in half on top of a colorful fitted sheet! Voila! Problem solved.
Tug sleeps happily between us and my husband and I are happily snuggled in our feather clouds.

A few of our dog loving friends have also adopted this bedding style and the positive reports are coming in!

Linen flat sheet, in place of a fitted sheet, and a "summer cover", both by Rough Linen. When it gets cold we add a light blanket. I prefer linen sheets, cool in summer, warm in winter. The linen products by Rough Linen are wonderful. It was a wonderful splurge.

I bought a mattress about 10 years ago with that STUPID latex memory foam or whatever. i bought it and it was like the "President" slept on... I spent a small fortune at the time for it. I was sorry a month or so in. It's HOT, it sinks in (yeah sure it pops back up) but my back is sore and I can't stand it.

I spent a lot of money buying a really nice down filled comforter which I can put a duvet on... my husband LOVES this. Best thing ever for cold winter nights. But if you have hot flashes... he gets it doubled on him! LOL

I do spend a lot on a good quality sheet. I like a nice 800 thread count. Of the highest quality Eqyptian cotton. Not all 800 TC are alike. Some are fake... you have to FEEL it. It should be thick and soften with washing. Not thin.

Gotta have a nice light weight blanket. Softer the better.

You can live life with not nice furniture. But towels, sheets, pillows and blankets are must have quality items. If you skimp on anything, skimp on everything but those and your quality of life is better. JMHO

PS the most important thing about sheet buying is to get it fitted snug. I can't stand even one wrinkle. I want is smooth... ahhhh

17 years ago, I purchased a 100% wool filled duvet for under $100. It serves the purpose of providing warmth during the winter without feeling heavy on top of me, nor making me sweat, being too warm. It literally seems to be warm and cool at the same time--feeling natural--not like synthetic bedding. I also have 100% cotton sheets, I can't stand anything that's poly or the like, which feel horrible. I don't spend a fortune either, looking for sales when I need new sheets.

Am I the only one who has an electric blanket? I turn it on to warm up the bed, then turn it off for a cozy night's sleep. I also sleep on a feather bed and under a down comforter. Flannel sheets when it's cold, cotton the rest of the time. Sometimes a wool blanket, sometimes cotton. I like to switch it around.

Eucalyptus sheets and a quilt. Some nights it's still a bit cool, so I throw on a light wool blanket.

I run my down pillows and duvet through the washer on the "sanitize" setting. No problem

In winter in our rv, we use a system called a Travasac. It is much like 2 sleeping bags with Velcro to attach the special sheets which we take out weekly to launder. This foils my husband from stealing all the covers. At home we use flannel sheets with a cotton comforter and a puffy comforter which we can pull up when necessary.

My DH and I visited Germany 20 years ago and discovered what you called "Scandinavian bedding". We purchased two individual comforters (smaller than twin size) along with the duvet covers. Went back to Germany 10 years ago and updated bedding. Love having my own comforter I can wrap around myself.
Temperpedic mattress, really really old soft down pillows (one goes over my head) and my comforter is all I need. DH has same, with addition of two Tonkinese cats that think he is their dad. He DOES feed them.

I have an electric blanket too in the winter and I love it! I also turn it on to warm up the bed (I hate cold sheets!) then turn it off when I get in bed. In the summer we just have a sheet and quilt over us with the windows open to the cool summer night.

Finally have it right! Natural latex mattress. Linen sheet tucked around mattress, linen duvet with down comforter in winter and without filler in summer. Down pillows with linen pillow slips. I love my bed!!!

Fitted sheet under, top sheet above, (cotton 500 thread count) and cotton coverlet on top. That's for three seasons. In coldest winter I add a down alternative quilt. I had a heavy down comforter but it's just too hot! Can't use it unless the furnace actually breaks down!

Fitted sheet, flat sheet, thermal cotton blanket, and matelesse. In winter we have a feather quilt encased with a duvet cover.

we live in the sub tropics. In order.... 18 inch memory foam mattress. mattress cover impenetrable to bugs. 3 in soft memory foam topper with a bug proof cover. then a cotton quilted mattress pad. next a plain linen sheet from Rough Linen, not tucked in anywhere. In summer I use another summer weight linen sheet on top, again not tucked in anywhere. In winter I will use a heavier weight linen cover instead of a top sheet. If it gets below 80 degrees we use a light weight silk quilt. WE have 4 std size pillows, 2 memory foam with the shaped dip in center and 2 down alternatives, with linen cases. We hang a mosquito net over the bed. When we lived in California, I used 700 ct Egyptian cotton sheets, plus a polyester blanket and a silk quilt. When I lived in the midwest, I used a wool bat duvet. lovely. also used an electric blanket to warm the bed, and had a big pibble & 3 burmese cats with me. I highly recommend the wool bat duvets and also the linen sheets from Rough Linen.

Don't like my mattress, but can't change that yet.
We have a heated mattress pad that gets turned on during every season except summer. Cotton fitted sheet and top sheet, can't do the wrinkle free stuff because I can't handle synthetic fabric. And a cotton down comforter that usually gets folded down to the bottom of the bed in summer but we use it every other season. That's it, can't handle anything even remotely heavy on me while I sleep. In all but summer I also keep a small, light blanket up near my pillow... As a side sleeper I need to use it over my hands to keep them warm.
All bedding is white... I like to be able to bleach it. And yes, at least once a year I wash my down comforter (haven't tried bleaching it though) and it washes easily, but it's true it takes a long time to dry. I give it a few runs on low through the dryer, shifting it around each cycle and then I drape it over the staircase railing from the 2nd floor to let it finish drying.

Once hot flashes started, the down comforter was retired. Now, with a fitted and flat sheet, I have numerous kantha quilts (up to 7 in the winter, 1 in the summer). The quilting gives insulation in layers and I can adjust instantly by throwing one or two over the footboard to get them out of the way. When I wake up I get to enjoy the colors. If it gets really cold, I have a Polartec throw I bought maybe 30 years ago. A rep from the mill was at a local flea market selling printed pieces done up as scarves and mittens. I didn't even know what the material was, but he had a wildly colorful throw which no one else wanted, so I finally bought it. So glad I did. I have an Indian cotton bedspread (all in plum with embroidery) to throw over the whole pile.

I pull all my beautiful bedding (silk quilts and damask duvet) aside and sleep onna fitted sheet wraped up in a comforter. I am years later still beating myself up for sending (pre-e-Bay, not that it matters) my Auntie Marie wedding gift, 100% fleecy wool, imported blanket off to the Goodwill because comforters were just as warm (they're not) and we heat here (yes but...) and I can wash it (but the wool coulda gone over the top of the comforter and not been washed/cleaned often) and the comforter is so much lighter (true). Now, w/ medical issues like anemia, etc., I'd give anything to have it back...the prettiest dusty rose too. They cost a fortune now, but I may just spend it one day.

Hang onto your wool blankets. As my mother used to say, "Wool is warm."

We used to live in Orange County, CA, but now we live in Rome, Italy so the climate is not much different. Natural latex mattress is a must, I wrote about my experience in another thread. Tried all the high count sheets and down duvets etc., they were all too heavy and cumbersome until I finally found Silk! My sheet sets are a silk/cotton combo stripes so you are not slipping all over the place and my pillowcases 100% silk charmeuse, so great for your hair (no more knots/breakage) and face (no more sleep wrinkles). I have 2 duvets ALL silk, inside and out. One is Summer weight at .5kg and one is Fall weight at 2kgs and can be tied together to make 2.5kg Winter weight. I had mine custom made because I also wanted the duvet shells in silk to keep it really light weight. I chose a 19 momme 100% silk cover for one and a silk/cotton mix for the other. Nothing slips or slides but it is definitely warm and super light. All of the covers/cases/sheets can be machine washed without any issues. I have had my sets for 3 yrs now and washed them several times. The silk filled duvet itself cannot be washed but should be put out in the sun every now and then. I will never go back to cotton or down, this beats everything hands down. Wendy and I had a lot of email conversations and she sent me samples of silk to choose from before I placed my order. The shipping was very reasonable and the package arrived swiftly. No allergies, no dust, just the softness of silk against every inch of my skin! If you've tried the rest, now try the best.

we had wool filled duvets in duvet covers. Two twin sized - I don't want to battle.... four years ago I found the silk duvets a light one for Summer and a heavier one for Winter. We love them!

vintage white linen tablecloths which I use for bottom and top sheets and then make pillowcases with ruffles. On top, Bella Notte silk and bamboo duvet cover. For the duvet, I stitched together two duvets to give my bed an overstuffed look and feel. I know it sounds hot, but I never seem to feel too warm and I can leave my window open all year.

Also use vintage tablecloths for my bath "towel": larger and more environmentally friendly as they take less time to dry. Use vintage tablecloths for my dishes too.

At 50 my body is not regulating temperatures very well, so this is a work in progress. I need many layers, and still have a hard time not being too cold or too hot.

In the mountain west: heated mattress pad (rarely use anymore since we now have radiant heat which is difficult to turn down at night), thick bamboo mattress pad (new), bamboo sheets (very soft, silky and seem to help with temperatures), polartec fleece blanket, coverlet with feather comforter/duvet folded at the bottom or feather comforter/duvet with coverlet folded at the bottom. Throughout one night I use all of these layers intermittently as I get hot and cold.

In Hawaii I have memory foam mattress so that complicates things, but still pretty similar to above except a poly comforter rather than feather/duvet. Yes, sometimes I am cold at night even in Hawaii and need my blanket and/or comforter. I seem to do better with the fan on and blankets that fan off and no blankets.

I found the feather comforter is warmed than all the down ones I ever had, and doesn't need constant fluffing. Weird but true. Also it is important to us to have sheets that are slippery so you don't have to lift yourself off them to turn over. Finally, for the first time I am sleeping in the nude rather than pajamas, which definitely affects the bedding.

Silk will be my next purchase for duvet fill. I've tried the summer weight down/feather duvets but they are too warm. I've learned to love the Scandinavian style (1 duvet per person). No arguements. Each to their own. I have a light weight "mid range" filling and my hubby has the highest "warmth" rating available...and the big baby is still too cold. You'd think at 6'5" and a solid 270lbs he would be well equiped for "cool". Nope. Still sleeps in 3 layers of clothing and 2 blankets. I prefer "the buff" and still get too warm. We live in Vancouver BC! How cold can he be? Good thing we didn't move to Edmonton...he'd be dead by now!

in the winter my electric blanket--I turn on high about half hour before bedtime--slip into nice warm bed of flannel sheets, electric blanket and a bedspread. I turn off electric blanket before I go to sleep or else wake up sweating even if I put it on low..I think flannel keeps warmth inside. During the summer just top sheet and light bedspread with fan on low. I purchased my last bedspread at JC Penney and love it--it is extra long so can tuck the pillows under it like we use to when we were young...pretty white with flower design in the middle. I had to wait years for a white bedspread--we had a black cat for 15 years--that does not add up to clean haha..sadly he died last summer.....our Yorkie dog is too little to jump on the bed--he is not allowed. For naps I use a single blanket to cover with so I don't mess up the whole bed. We wash our sheets weekly--I love the smell of clean sheets...

Layers. The softest sheets from Restoration Hardware. A soft and light blanket. And a down alternative comforter. A heating pad for pain control. Two chihuahuas, a silky terrier, and a cat or two some nights.

First of all nice warm waterbed with a fitted cotton sheet 600 thread count, a sheet, then duvet down comforter then a sheet on that cause kitty will sleep on bed. And a side fleece blanket if it gets cold during summer!

I have fitted cotton sheet/pillow case set with duvet to match. Mattress has to be firm. with good back support. I really don't like soft mattresses at all. I'd pay a good price to make sure the mattress is a good quality one. It has to be no fuss bedding, as frills, and too much decorative work on duvets are just too much to clean.
