Need Help finishing my living room decor

last modified: 11 years ago

I'm trying for a coastal feel. I have two spaces that I need advice on. I've arranged the furniture in two different ways as seen in the pictures below. I'm open to all advice but specifically with the two areas below.

1. To the right of the mounted tv- Should I hang something, put up floating shelves or do a built in or do shelves and keep the cabinet I have. I'm open to ideas.

2. Over my console by the front door- does anyone have any ideas for the wall. Should I leave it empty or place a mirror or art work?

Thanks so much for your help.

the couch should be across from the chairs. one the wall with the two paintings, that need to be lowered down a bit. or you can put the two chairs on that wall and float the couch on the chair side.
the small brown table just looks out of place, as well as the little white cabinet by the fireplace, once you move the couch to that wall, the small white cabinet might make a great end table for that wall.
bring the chairs in a little bit on the carpet. if you leave it as is (which isnt bad), you need to add another chair and table to the art wall.
i would opt for a plant in the corner by the FP.
Honestly the wall behind the sofa needs something, try that console over there. and you need some art on that wall. or a floating shelf with leaning photos on it?
it just seems a little barren around the outside of the room, cant tell whats going on. but it feels empty.
next two things are a coffee table and something for that back wall.

I like the sofa where it is as it's the largest TV viewing area to sit. Switch places with the console table & the one piece in the corner which is sitting diagonally. Place the console on the wall centered under toe pictures. Find or buy a round mirror to hang over the small cabinet next to the front door.

Turn the end table the other way that is placed between the chairs. You will need a lamp on that table, Also add one of the small plants & photos to that table as well. Spread the items out on the bottom shelf of the console table so the entire space is being used.

Your prints that are hanging (now) above the console table will need to be lowered to be more at eye level as you are sitting in the chairs. We need to find something for the one bare wall that is being used as the walkway behind the sitting area. Do you have another piece of wood narrow table perhaps. Place a lamp on it & frame a collection of family photos in black & white to spread out on that wall. You may also need a floor runner along that walkway to better define it.

Pull the ottoman to act as a coffee table for the sofa. Put a tray on it with a knit throw over it.

What do you think? Please take more photos after making changes.

You have some beautiful pieces-great floors and love your wall color. Here are some suggestions:

*Try placing that gorgeous console table on your empty wall across from the 2 chairs or behind the couch on the other empty wall. it's such a great piece, but it seems cramped in the space it is in now.

*need a large piece of art or table on the empty wall behind the sofa!

*lower the paintings and center them above the console table

*try placing the chest that is in the corner of the room to the left of the fireplace (it gets lost there) on the wall where the console was and hang a vertical mirror above it.

*the addition of a large square coffee table would be nice in your space.

What is your paint color? It's beautiful

I have to agree with Flair lighting. Move the tall reeds you have next to the fireplace or try just a large sculpture. A mirror where the console table is would look nice but the table looks out of place there. I love the colors. Some art work on the bare walls and creative accessories on a coffee table would finish it off nicely

Thanks everyone for the ideas. The reason we have the cabinet near the fireplace is to hide the cable box and dvd player. That space is really narrow. We've tried the couch against that wall, but since it's such a small space it doesn't quite work well and the chairs definitely are too big for that area. I'm going to move around the console table to see how it works in other areas of the room tomorrow and will post pictures.

moved this around a bit. Any reactions to these changes? I also recently bought this rustic wooden trunk that may work in here. Needs some sanding and possibly staining.

the console with the marble looking top, take that too the picture wall. tho i would get another chair for there in the future.

I love the old trunk!!! but I almost think a coat rack for that area would be cute.

maybe the trunk can be your coffee table!

i would put the reeds in the cable box corner and find an old wooden box to set your receiver

on or in. I have one of the old boxes i turned to stand up and use as a storage and table

Not sure exactly where you liked the console best? Behind the couch or under the pictures? The console top material is reclaimed wood with a parquet pattern. think the trunk is a bit too large for a coffee table.

Love the changes you made. I think the console table looks great in both spaces-behind the sofa and/or across from the 2 chairs. The question is where do you like it and where does it work best for your needs? Love the small chest and wicker basket next to your door. Now you just need something to hang above it. Great changes. Keep us posted. Touch decision.

I came up with another combination. This definitely opens up the room. The question is which is the best set up for the furniture for all three combinations? Also in this scenario does the carpet seem to small? The chair closest to the tv doesn't have both legs on the carpet.

Like jck910's suggestion of moving the tv on wall where the 2 framed pictures are right now and then making your fireplace/mantel the focal point of the room. Is that possible?

Also, this last placement of furniture would be great is you decide to move the tv to that wall. If not, I think your couch works better floating on the other wall directly across the fireplace for easy view of the tv.

You really have so many options. I think you just have to figure out which works best for you. Good luck!

Love the changes- adding a mirror and lamp to console table will be awesome- love the white chest between the chairs. Think your rug is fine. Would pic one more accent color to brighten up some with throws and pillows. May I ask where you found your chairs???

When we first moved into the house, the tv was where the prints are, but the windows produced a lot of glare. Even though the tv is big, my husband wants it over the fireplace. If only there was a little more space to the left of the fireplace because there would be more options. The chairs are from living spaces.

Sorry, I joined the discussion late. The last furniture placement (that you feel opens up the room) has one problem, though. It is hard to watch TV from either of the seats - the sofa or the chairs - as they are all angled at 90 degrees. But it does open the room. In which case you might want to remove the TV altogether to give the room a more quiet feel - for drawing guests in and conversation in front of the fireplace. I know, I know the hubby wants the TV above the fireplace...

In that case moving TV to the furthest wall (left of fireplace) would be better. The fireplace would then be opened for a lovely mirror in silver or gold frame, to add reflection to the room. I don't think that hubby would object to that. Especially if the TV is lowered.
