Should be fine if you have a router table with a fence to control depth of cut or a rabbeting bit with a bottom mount bearing, as long as there's flat surface to guide the bearing.

A shoulder plane, if you have one, would probably be faster and easier than setting up a router.

quicker on a table saw, just drop the blade down to match the cut. Cut what you need to to allow clearance.

Thanks rwiegand and captive! I can see how the table saw would be quicker. I don't have a table saw or a router or a shoulder plane, so maybe buying a cheap little table saw is the way to go. Buying a router, bits, and workbench will probably cost over $100 and my time is worth something too, so buying a $200 table saw might be the ticket.

You didn't ask but putting $200 into a used table saw is far better than buying a new $200 saw. Most of us built our shop( figuritivly speaking) around a table saw. Therefore it's the single most important dicission made while setting up a woodshop.

I'd use a coarse hand file and the finish with a finer one.

I've seen a lot of good materials trashed by trying to get by with cheap tools.
