Container growing a fig tree help please

So I have a buddy that lives near DC- and I live in SW MI, in a nice warm zone 6 pocket..

The other say she tells me she is planning on sending me a hearty fig tree that is supposed to be able to live here. She wants to send me something since I'm sending her a bunch of tomato and pepper plants soon.

Anywho, the fig tree is only supposed to be a foot or so high, and I don't have anywhere to put it in the yard this year, and maybe not even till spring of 2017. I don't even know what kind of fig tree it's supposed to be yet.

So before this tree gets here, I am needing to know how to keep this thing alive in a container for a while. What kind of soil do I need? Regular potting soil, gritty mix, the stuff I would use for sqft gardening, what?

And what size pot? Can I get away with a couple gallon nursery pot, or will I need to use one of my five gallon buckets, or jump straight to sacrificing one of my big ole "party tubs"- those big tubs with rope handles meant for filling with ice and beverages, lol. Or should I just pot it up for the size it comes as, and repot to something bigger if/when needed?
