Hey John, fun idea. I don't think the 3 gals have handles, only 5-45 gallons do, at least the Root Pouch brand that's readily available. I haven't hung the 5 gals up, but I've thought about it and I think it'd work well. I'd probably go with the black or brown pouches, they're the strongest. I've ripped the handles on a few 15 gal grey pouches moving around big trees. But the rest are in good shape.
