I like the A/B 2 part wood bleach that Sherwin Williams carries in their Chemical Coatings division. It lightens the wood and kills the red, without turning an olive green. Always test, test, test with your stain to make sure the color values are staying consistent with the different woods you may have working together

Hi, were you able to do this successfully, Pimlanehouse? We have the exact same problem. Exposed beams that we had planned on painting white, so we didn't specify the wood type. Once they went up, we loved the look of the wood - just not the orange. The other wood in the house is white oak with a grey tint. We need help!:)

Sherwin Williams no longer carries that product. You'll have to research a wood bleach available in your area. It could help some, but white oak is awfully green compared with anything orange. A gray stain or glaze that contains a white pigment will kill the yellow in the orange color, but will leave it a rosy cast, which is the opposite of olive green.

Did any of you have success or could send me pictures. We have White Oak Cabinets and Douglas Fir beams. We don't want to go dark but don't know how to get the orange and yellow out of the beams (every stain I try the yellow and orange shines through) my painter didn't have any other suggestions and bleaching is the only thing I can find that might work (I don't want them white white though). HELP please!

I'm not @heidi, but here is a photo of Douglas fir with untreated in between some pieces treated with Woca lye and then with Woca white oil.

okay, that worked. Here are two more. The top one (of the photos below) has the untreated piece of Douglas fir in the middle this time, with treated pieces on either side. The bottom photo is of the spindles for a railing, all treated. Once these pieces finally get installed (waiting on contractor), I'll post pictures of them in place.

We bleached our fir pediments. They came out with NO red undertones and are a lovely blonde color. We are currently trying to put a little red/honey back into them because they don't match our posts....

@zory so sorry, gmail told me today about your question. Our painter tried bleach but it wasn’t enough. we had to use a pickling white stain. our beams sat in the sun too long i think. I didn’t know that was an issue until later. They were just too red/orange to start with.

We used the Woca white lye and then the Woca white color oil. We have used it on spruce, southern yellow pine, Douglas fir and sime sort of Brazilian softwood (an interior barn door that was all we could get during the pandemic) that was an amazing orange color, and all are beautiful with no orange in sight. its still dark here (mornmorning) but when it lightens up I will post a photo of the Doug Fir pieces (railing).
