Long dark hall

I need to put new flooring and paint in a long and narrow (15 feet by 3 feet) hall in my basement. There are no windows and it is too narrow to hang art. There is a steep curving stairway, a long hall that ends in a doorway to the laundry room and then a landing on the left with a closet and doorway to the basement apartment. What kind of carpeting/tile and wall covering would you suggest to add interest and make it seem less like a prison?

I would have wood floor for the stairs and tile for the floor. You could either paint the walls white or a bright color that you like. As for art, you can hang prints or anything you want,,it's not too narrow. You could also add mirror on the other side of the wall,,,if not, art on both sides works. Make sure you have enough lighting

I know you say there is no space for Art and I agree. However what about pics of your favorite memories? I have those in my narrow staircase and they make me smile every time I go up or down!

Let you tile brighten up the space! It's not on the main living area, so there is no reason why you can't have fun. I love the first blue/ white tile. Makes me smile just to look at it!

I love Printesa's idea about wood for the stairs and may tile for the floor. If I were to do tile I would put it on a diamond shape so it makes it look bigger. I would also do the biggest tile I could so that way there's minimum grout lines. I would do mirrors on the wall to make the hallway look bigger.
