How much space do you need around the island perimeter?

I am trying to figure out how long and wide I can make my island without bumping into surrounding cabinetry. Similar to this kitchen my dishwasher, oven and refrigerator are on the outer walls, my cook top is on my island.

The National Kitchen and Bath Association recommends 42" with 48" for any high traffic areas, especially where there is seating. 36" is the absolute minimum, but it really varies depending on the layout. Those measurements are cabinet to cabinet, and then you'd have an 1 1/2" overhang on a full overlay cabinet which would take up 3 more inches. Appliances need to be able to open easily and remain accessible once opened. Cabinet depth refrigerators are ideal for those scenarios where there is cabinetry directly opposite because they save so much floor space. A kitchen and bath designer will be able to make sure all clearances/landing zones, etc. are appropriate for your space.

    Good luck!
