Here are pictures of our living room and kitchen to give you a sense of the rest of the house. We don't plan on putting shades on the living room windows, but my wife would like to put some on the kitchen window. We don't want to block our views, and we're tall and ceilings are only 8' high, so we don't want to cover the top of the windows. Please help! Thanks!

I thought about top down bottom up, but we don't necessarily need the privacy. We have water views, so they are typically up or down, not really in between. I was also afraid the top down part adds a half inch to the thickness when they are stacked to the top. Am I correct?

Would you do three on one headrail or three individual shades? (the window is too big to do one blackout shade - too wide x tall) :(

Personally I'd go with curtains hung properly so that when they are open they don't cover any of the window.

As far as one head rail or separate, you would have to talk to the designer. Sometimes you have the option, sometimes it's a matter of structural soundness.

I am not sure about the half inch. Sometimes these blinds are nice from the standpoint of filtering light if privacy is not an issue.

Ok. I reread your post. You want the black out. So I agree that they will be either up or down. They do have the cordless blinds that are easy to operate.

What about pleated shades. They aren't my favorite but it seems you are looking for function over form. They wouldn't be too prominent in the closed position.

I meant not prominent in the open position when not in use.

I think we are leaning towards three individual blackout cellular shades one for each pane - battery operated with a remote control. Any thoughts against? We are likely taking the easy way out :)

If you really like blinds (and cellular shades really are so nice and streamlined if you like a modern look) it looks like blindsaver.com has them available over ten feet wide. I haven't bought from them, but they carry the big brands so it should be okay.

It is always nice to be able to get what you really want!

Love that large window! Have you considered bamboo shades? They're modern, have a cordless option, are available in extreme widths, and a blackout liner can be added, like these: http://www.selectblinds.com/bambooblinds/woven-woods-home-collection.html

simple roller shades all around. Those are some wonderful windows with spectacular views.
