I'd suggest one fabric but somewhat different colors so the look isn't monotone. For example, I have a dark brown couch but mid-tone brown chairs facing it. Both are in a tweedy fabric.

you do want to avoid looking like a trendy hotel lobby. i like couches in solids, armchairs in prints.
